Fighting chance.”-Annette McDermott, What Really Happened At The Little BighornThe Aftermath Of The Battle Of The Little BighornThe Battle of the Little Bighorn, also called Custer’s Last Stand, marked the most decisive Native American victory and the worst U.S. Army defeat in the long Plains Indian War. The demise of Custer and his men outraged many white Americans and confirmed their image of Native Americans as wild and bloodthirsty.Despite their overwhelming victory, the Battle of Little Bighorn had severe consequences for the Sioux nations and Plains Indians. Prior to the battle, the American public generally agreed with the government’s policy of trying to negotiate peacefully with these Native Americans. However, once the news spread that 200 U.S. soldiers had been murdered by the Sioux, public opinion quickly turned against them. The U.S. Army dispatched more troops. Their mission was to seek them out and “deal” with them. The Lakota hunting grounds were invaded by powerful Army expeditionary forces determined to conquer the Northern Plains Indians. Most of the declared “hostiles” had surrendered within one year of the fight. The Black Hills were taken by the U.S. government without any compensation. The Battle of Little Bighorn Map | Courtesy of the National Park ServiceTake A Deeper DiveTo learn more about this important event in American history, I recommend: The Last Stand: Custer, Sitting Bull, and the Battle of the Little Bighorn by Nathaniel Philbrick. If you’re particularly interested in military strategy and tactics then you also might wish to pick up a copy of The Strategy of Defeat at the Little Big Horn: A Military and Timing Analysis of the Battle by Frederick Wagner, III.Things To Do At Little Bighorn Battlefield National MonumentI recommend beginning at the Little Bighorn Visitors Center. You can also walk through the national cemetery. If you have additional time then I recommend driving the 4.5 mile tour road to the Reno-Benteen Battlefield, the second stage of the Battle of the Little Bighorn.7th Cavalry Monument at Little Bighorn Battlefield | Historic Sites In Montana – Courtesy of the National Park Service1. The Colonial Road Runners and the Peninsula Track Club have Grand Prix series to recognize excellence for running the club races from January to December. There are many similarities between the two, but also major differences. And while most results are straightforward, some unusual things occur as the two series come down to the wire. One runner, Susan Hagel, 51, of Norfolk, the race director of Williamsburg’s Lake Matoaka Trail Challenge 4.3 Miler every August, was involved in crazy occurrences for both clubs. The PTC has 12 races annually in their series, but occasionally a race cancellation drops that number down. Last year, the PTC Grand Prix had 11, the Menchville Winter Chill 5K, 10 Mile Run for the Heart, Riverwatch on the Piankatank 5K, Yorktown Freedom Run 8K, Timberneck 5K, Joe-Zilla 5 Miler, Smart Smiles 5K, Mulberry Island Half Marathon, Poquoson Run for the Bulls 5K, Yorktown Battlefield 10 Miler, and Run for the Son for Haiti 5K. If you miss a race, you lose out on an opportunity to score points. Nobody ran all 11, but Hagel had 10, Valor Foy Jones had nine, and Ron and Helen Worthington had eight. In contrast, the CRR competitors have a choice of any of the club’s 23 races during the year, but with a maximum of the best 12 scoring. Two competitors, both race walkers, Cathy Kaurich and Paul Rienth, competed in all 23, Kaurich with a club record 148 consecutive CRR Grand Prix races, and counting. The previous all-time record streak had been 108, by her son Ben Kaurich, a Jamestown High grad. For the PTC, there is one overall Grand Prix champion, then award plaques go to the top 10 men and top 10 women. The scoring recognizes running points as much as volunteer points, and extra points can be earned in various categories, including age group records, and placing in the top three overall for running points, and race directing, Adopt-a-Highway Litter Getter, writing four or more articles for the PTC newsletter, etc. for volunteering points, but the volunteer points cannot exceed the running points.Hagel, a member of the Virginia Peninsula Road Racing Hall of Fame, has nine PTC Grand Prix Championship titles, 2007-08, 2011, 2016, and 2019-23. No other runner has more than three, with Toano’s Rhonda Venable, a past PTC president and a Hall-of-Famer, having three (1995-97).This year, a mere seven seconds in the final PTC race ofdriving tour - Review of Yorktown Battlefield, Yorktown, VA

2025-04-07Dec. 7, 1941. The Japanese navy aimed to take control of the U.S. patrol plane base in a surprise attack at Midway Atoll, a tiny group of islands roughly halfway between the U.S. mainland and Asia. The country also wanted to destroy what was left of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.FILE - Smoke billows from the USS Yorktown and bursts from anti-aircraft fire fill the air after a Japanese bomber hit the aircraft carrier in the Battle of Midway near Midway Islands during World War II in June 1942. (U.S. Navy via AP, File)APBut U.S. forces intercepted communications about the attack and were ready. The five-day battle was fought about 200 miles off the group of islands. Besides sinking the Akagi, the Kaga and two other Japanese aircraft carriers, U.S. forces shot down more than 250 Japanese airplanes. More than 3,000 Japanese servicemen died.U.S. losses included more than 300 servicemen, about 150 airplanes and the Yorktown, which was damaged in the battle and then sunk by a Japanese submarine about 100 miles (161 kilometers) away while being towed for repairs.Of the 4,600 or so men who served on the Yorktown from 1937 to 1942, it’s believed there are only two still alive, said Michael Leggins, president of the U.S.S. Yorktown CV-5 Club, a group dedicated to providing information about the ship. One of them, Hodges, is a retired Baptist minister in Johnson City, Tennessee. He joined the Navy the day after Pearl Harbor and worked in the Yorktown’s boiler room during the battle. He recalled in a videoconference interview with the AP that after two torpedoes exploded, he found himself stuck between two pipes, his left arm so tightly pinned he couldn’t pull it out. His shoulder was also dislocated, an injury that still troubles him 81 years later.Once freed with the help of a fellow sailor, a life jacket was taped over his injured shoulder and he held on to another to swim more than 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) to a waiting ship. He said the journey took about six hours. This undated photo provided by Mark Taylor shows Robert Taylor in his Navy uniform. (Courtesy of Mark Taylor via AP)APThe other surviving Yorktown veteran, Robert Taylor, needed parental permission to join the Navy on Sept. 12, 1941, at the age of 17. Taylor, now 99, manned an anti-aircraft gun during the battle.Historians knew the crew tried to keep the ship afloat by jettisoning some smaller anti-aircraft guns on the port side. But among the discoveries from the new video was that the sailors also cut away the larger guns, said Hans Van Tilburg, the maritime archeologist and historian for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries. The action “speaks to
