The God of War video game series follows Kratos, a ruthless and powerful Spartan general who travels across the ancient world, slaying gods, titans, mythical creatures, and more. In the original game series, Kratos took on the Greek pantheon, while the soft reboot pitted him against the creatures and gods of Norse Mythology. In his vengeful quest against his enemies, Kratos needs the proper weaponry to get the job done. Each main game in the series introduces at least one new weapon that creates a fun new way to play and freshens up the franchise for long-time fans. 10 The Blades Of Chaos Are Unforgettable Classics First Appearance: God Of War (2005) At the start of the series, Kratos is equipped with the legendary Blades of Chaos, a pair of short swords chained to his wrists. These blades were granted to Kratos when he vowed to become the servant of Ares, and they have become a staple of the entire franchise, accompanying Kratos during his toughest battles. The Blades of Chaos are unlike most weapons found in hack-and-slash games due to their versatility. In battle, Kratos can use them to pull enemies toward him, swing foes around in circles and toss them like rag-dolls, and stab opponents multiple times in close-range combat. 9 The Leviathan Axe Is A Worthy Successor To The Blades Of Chaos First Appearance: God Of War (2018) In the soft reboot of the series, Kratos leaves Ancient Greece and the Blades of Chaos behind and heads into Midgard, where he acquires a new weapon known as the Leviathan Axe. This enchanted weapon was created by the dwarves Brok and Sindri, and it made its way to Kratos after his wife Faye passes away. Many were skeptical about the iconic Blades of Chaos being replaced, but the Leviathan Axe proved to be the perfect successor. Imbued with ice magic, it can be used for both close- and long-range combat, and when it is thrown, Kratos can magically summon it back to his hand. Throughout the game, Kratos also utilizes it to complete puzzles and open new pathways.. Upon realizing that he could not die, Kratos left Greece entirely. The least, this one is my favorite that makes more sense to me. According to the God of War Lore and Legends (2020) book, we come to know a little bit about the Great Flood at the end of God of War 3. The Flood was so devastating that it affected the Lake of Nine in Midgard. From that book, we get to know that the Jormungandr (The Giant Serpent) appeared in Lake of Nine out of nowhere. It is speculated that Jormungandr might have followed the flood from Ancient Greece to Midgard. Well, this makes sense as according to some epics, Thor & Jormungandr were supposed to fight each other to death during the events of Ragnarok. Additionally, as I mentioned above, Kratos forcibly threw himself off the cliff. So it is possible that the Great Flood carried Kratos from Ancient Greece to Midgard in God of War.So, according to me, that is how Kratos get to Norse Mythology from Greek Mythology to begin his journey from Greek to Norse Mythology. Modern-day symbols attached to Kratos from the God of War video series include the following:Chains and Blades: The “Blades of Chaos” are a pair of chained weapons that Kratos wields, which have become synonymous with his character in the game series.Red Tattoo: In the video games, Kratos has a distinctive red tattoo that winds over his eye and down his arm.Spartan Armor and Skirt: Representing his origins from Sparta.Ashen Skin: Due to a curse, Kratos’ skin is covered in the ashes of his deceased family, giving him a ghostly appearance and the nickname “Ghost of Sparta.”Kratos in God of WarBy Santa Monica Studio, Fair use.The name Kratos is very well-known to a lot of people from the God of War video game series. There, the video game’s protagonist Kratos is portrayed as a tragic Herculian-type anti-hero whose family was murdered and so he wanders ancient Greece and battles gods and monsters seeking revenge and justice. The fact that this story has nothing to do with that of the Kratos from Greek myths is easy to notice. The creators of the God of War games have admitted that they had never heard of the god of strength and chose the name Kratos simply because it means strength in the modern Greek language too.It is a funny coincidence, however, especially given that in God of War II, Kratos is the one who frees Prometheus from his chains. Stig Asmussen, director of God of War III, also notes that the two characters still fit together in a way given that they are both presented as “pawns” of higher powers. The only difference being that the video-game-Kratos struggles against this role of “pawn” and fights against the gods (killing most of them by God of War III) while the Kratos from Greek mythology happily accepts his role as a pawn.Kratos Facts1. 2025-03-26Prophecy of "The Marked One" would never occur. For several years, Deimos believed that Kratos would come to his rescue. As time passed, Deimos' hope began to fade, and was replaced with hatred for the brother who had left him to rot.God of War: Ghost of Sparta“Did you think I would forget? Did you think that I would forgive? I will never forgive you, brother!”–Deimos upon being found by Kratos. After he met - and defeated - Callisto in Atlantis, Kratos was compelled to find his brother at any cost. After he undertook a perilous journey that took him across Greece, Kratos finally found Deimos deep in the Temple of Thanatos, suspended from a tree.Freed from his chains, save for a single massive Gauntlet that was locked around his right arm, Deimos wanted revenge against Kratos for not protecting him and quickly assaulted his brother, swearing he would never forgive Kratos for his perceived abandonment.Deimos was soon interrupted, as Thanatos arrived and grabbed Deimos and took him to Suicide Bluffs to throw him off the edge. Kratos, barely able to stand from his beating, managed to follow them to Suicide Bluffs.Locked in combat, Deimos and Thanatos never saw Kratos arrive. Thanatos managed to nearly throw Deimos off the cliff until Kratos raced to his aid. Rushing over to his brother, and barely saving him from certain death, Kratos proclaimed never to leave Deimos again, and gave Deimos the Arms of Sparta.Joining forces, side by side, as brothers, Deimos and Kratos began their attack on Thanatos. Together, the pair followed Thanatos along the cliffs and eventually caught up with him, where Thanatos stated that Ares had chosen poorly, where he should have opted for Kratos instead of Deimos, all those years ago. He then said that it didn't matter anymore, that nothing Kratos does is of his own choosing. Kratos shouted that no one, not even the gods, decide his fate to which Thanatos responded that the gods decide and the Sisters of Fate make it so and that Kratos was nothing but a pawn in a game he didn't even know was being played. The Spartan Brothers charged at Thanatos, and fought the God of Death together, until Thanatos transformed into a gigantic winged monster, grabbed Deimos, and crushed him against the cliff side, which effectively killed him. Kratos, fueled by extreme rage upon witnessing the murder of his brother, unleashed Thera's Bane at an inhuman level and defeated Thanatos, avenging his brother's death. Kratos watches Deimos get buried Kratos carried Deimos' lifeless body to the top of the Suicide Bluffs via the Path of Solitude, where the Grave Digger had prepared a grave for Deimos next to that of their mother's
2025-04-17Midgard)Kratos Revealing that he is a God to Loki in GoW 2018Below are the 3 theories that suggest how did Kratos moved from Greek to Norse Mythology shifting the focus from Greek to Norse Mythology in God of War.Theory 1Before we get started, take a look at the picture above. The above picture clearly shows the use of boat to travel between Realms (Dimensions). This makes sense as the Old Gods like Tyr sometimes also used a Boat to travel across the Realms. So it is somehow speculated that Kratos too used a Boat to travel from Ancient Greece to Midgard in God of War.Theory 2Another theory suggests that Kratos had a nightmare wherein he was confronted by a mysterious lady. That lady was none other than Faye. Further, Faye was accompanied by 3 Wolves of which 2 were Skoll & Hati. While Skoll and Hati disappeared soon, the third Wolf dragged Kratos to Midgard starting his journey in Norse Mythology in GoW. This is because Faye wanted Kratos to help Vanirs defeat the Aesir Gods. Also, one of the connecting theories that surprised me came from a Reddit User, jhinfiniite. To summarise quickly, Skoll and Hati would only exist when Atreus (Loki) woke them up. For this to happen, Kratos would have to travel to Midgard and help Loki wake his Grandsons (Skoll & Hati). So this is a never-ending cycle that keeps on happening. And when things go a bit different after Baldur appears, this loop observes a sudden change in direction. You may have noticed Kratos saying “The Cycle Ends Here” after which Fimbulwinter starts leading toward Ragnarok. This was the reason why Kratos was brought to Midgard to start the Ragnarok Event in GoW Ragnarok.Theory 3Image Source – God Of War Lore And Legends (Book)Last but not
