In addition to Gemini for search, summaries, and Q&A, Google Maps for Android and iOS are getting updates to improve the entire driving experience “from start to finish.” When planning a route, Google Maps is adding a prominent “Add stops” button next to “Start” at the bottom of your screen. This brings up a dedicated “Add stops to your route” sheet.Besides the “Search along route” field, there are Restaurants, Gas, Coffee, and Grocery chips, as well as carousels for Top restaurants and Points of interest. You can see how far out it is and open the listing before adding the stop. As you’re driving, you’ll see “enhanced” navigation, with the map doing a better job of surfacing lanes, crosswalks, and road signs. Google will also “show you exactly which lane you should be in” with a “blue line in the lane markers while navigating.” Related: Waze ‘Conversational Reporting’ lets you literally call out road incidentsThere’s also the ability to report weather disruptions from the revamped UI like Unplowed road, Low visibility, and Flood road. Finally, upon journey’s end, arrival guidance, which already marks the building entrance, will show nearby parking lots and prompt you to “Save parking.” You can also quickly get walking directions to the entrance via AR Live View. The new Add stops experience, reporting weather disruptions, and updated arrival guidance are rolling out globally on Android and iOS this week. Enhanced driving navigation is rolling out to Google Maps next month starting in over 30 metro areas.

This morning driving to work I had a bad surprice: Elvis’ voice was gone ! I’ve tried to delete and reinstall the app (3.1.1 for Iphone) but he didn’t come back…Is the King dead ? What country are you in? In the US, for iPhone, we only have the option for Male or Female voice. CBenson March 30, 2012, 1:32pm 3 The Elvis option shows on my phone, if you set the level of guidance to mimimal. Don’t know if its working as I keep the level of guidance set to full. The voices are still there, but only under minimal guidance, so no spoken street names. That is because these are pre-recorded sound files and Full guidance uses a text-to-speech engine. Ewo82 March 30, 2012, 4:26pm 5 I’ve tried to switch off navigation guidance (I was only able to find an “on/off” option in the sound menu), this way there are more English voices in the general menu but no Elvis :?I live in Italy, last time I used Waze the Elvis voice worked perfectly…I know it’s not a very big issue, Waze is still fantastic, but I miss the funny touch of Elvis’ voice The way they have this set up is a terrible UI with sound settings in three different menus! :x @ Waze, not at you.If you are using the Waze 3 app, under Sound, there is an item for “Navigational Guidance.” Set it to “Directions Only” which will then display as “Minimal” back in the Sound menu. Then go to the General menu and there is an item called “Navigational guidance.” Why in two places? :x Tap on that and select English (Elvis) from the list. If you don’t see Elvis in that list, then … I don’t know what the problem might be. It should be available in the World server infrastructure.Note that the “Navigational guidance” in the General menu will not appear if you have Navigational Guidance in the Sound menu set to “None” or “Including street names” (Full). They have a dedicated UI person, but I have no idea how they can call this a good settings interface. Ewo82 April 1, 2012, 5:18am 7 In the sound menu I can only switch on/off Navigational Guidance. :? gerben April 2, 2012, 10:29pm 8 full guidance is still not available at the world server. The Elvis voice never got old for my kids. They would listen to him every day and laugh at his sayings while we were driving around town and now he is gone… maybe Google maps wasn’t so bad after all. Understanding the Map System Used by WazeAs a Digital Nomad who relies heavily on navigation apps for my travels, I have often wondered about the map system that powers Waze. Contrary to popular belief, the Waze map is separate from the map used by Google Maps. In fact, Waze has its own map system, specifically tailored to its unique routing algorithm. The Origin of Waze’s Map DatabaseThe initial base map data used by Waze was sourced from the US Census Bureau TIGER data. It is important to note that the FreeMap data was not published under open content licenses before the shift to the Waze project. This database forms the foundation of the Waze map and includes all the streets and places necessary for the algorithm to calculate routes effectively. Is Waze Based on Google Maps?Although Google owns both mapping apps, Waze and Google Maps, they are separate entities that offer distinct features. While there may be some overlap in terms of functionality, Waze and Google Maps have different focuses and cater to different user preferences. Therefore, it is inaccurate to assume that Waze is simply a subset of Google Maps.Supported Operating Systems for WazeAs a versatile navigation app, Waze is available for both Android and iOS operating systems. This means that regardless of whether you use an Android device or an iPhone, you can take advantage of the features and benefits offered by Waze. The Power of Crowd-Sourcing in WazeOne of the key strengths of Waze lies in its ability to collect and utilize crowd-sourced data. The app uses the information it gathers to calculate average speeds, identify errors, improve road layout, and understand road and turn directions. This data-driven approach allows Waze to deliver real-time traffic reports and provide accurate navigation guidance to its users. The Merger of Google Maps and WazeThere have been talks about the merging of Google Maps and Waze since Google acquired Waze in 2013. However, it is important to note that, for the time being, both apps continue to operate independently. Google remains committed to maintaining the unique brand and thriving community of Waze users. Why Waze Excels Compared to Google MapsWhen it comes to comparing Waze and Google Maps, there are several factors to consider. One notable difference lies in their data sources. While Google Maps relies on various data points, Waze heavily relies on user-submitted information. This includes real-time updates on traffic conditions, accidents, road closures,

Waze, the Google-owned driving navigation app, has released several updates to the Android and iOS applications to significantly improve your driving experience. Not only will these improvements make your journeys easier, but they will also keep you safe. Waze Gets Six Updates That Make It Much Easier To UseGoogle announced a whole bunch of updates to Waze today, and they look set to make your time on the road stress-free and a lot safer.Image Credit: WazeSince Google bought Waze, they've brought their money and technology to the platform to make it so much better than it used to be. Let's talk about some of the changes to the app.1. Roundabouts Will Become Easier To NavigateRoundabouts are an uncommon road feature in the United States. Much smaller countries (in both population and area) like France and the UK have nearly three times as many roundabouts a piece. So, if you have no idea how to navigate a roundabout, it's not a thing of shame.Fortunately, the new Waze update can make it a lot easier for you to see exactly how you should be navigating a roundabout, including the entry, exit, and which lane you should be in.2. You'll Know Early If First Responders Are Stopped On Your RouteAccidents happen, and fortunately, we have societies that can respond to these relatively quickly. Unfortunately, that means that first responders might be stopped on your route. If you know this ahead of time, you can change how you drive, or potentially choose another route.. Apple Maps I’ll be honest with you: I didn’t like Apple Maps when it first came out. Cities and towns weren’t very detailed. The maps were boring and bland. And some key features were absent. But over the last couple of years, Apple Maps has made a big push to rectify these shortcomings. For example, map details have greatly improved. But it’s still not completely there yet. Try zooming at different scales, it’s missing businesses in other parts of the world. The second reason I like Apple Maps is that its real-time traffic has significantly improved.
