You are here: Home / Articles / Software / An explanation of uBlock Origin’s new permissionsuBlock Origin, a resource-efficient adblocking extension for Google Chrome, updated yesterday to version 0.9.8.2. With the update came a permissions change – the extension wants to access more data than it did previously. When an extension makes a permissions change, Chrome updates but disables the extension automatically and pops up a little notification to indicate the new permissions.“uBlock Origin requires new permissionsThe newest version of the extension “uBlock Origin” requires more permissions, so it has been disabled. It can now: Read and change all your data on the websites you visitChange your privacy-related settings”All of that can make it seem quite ominous. Fortunately, the developer provides an explanation on the github project page. The previous permissions were “Read and change all your data on the websites you visit” and version 0.9.8.2 added “Change your privacy-related settings”.This is necessary to be able to:Disable “Prefetch resources to load pages more quickly” This will ensure no TCP connection is opened at all for blocked requests: It’s for your own protection privacy-wise For pages with lots for blocked requests, this will actually remove overhead from page load (if you did not have the setting already disabled). When uBlock blocks a network request, the expectation is that it blocks completely the connection, hence the new permission is necessary for uBlock to do truthfully what it says it does. So, the permissions change is to allow the extension to ensure that the prefetch setting is disabled. This prevents web traffic from “leaking” out and requesting resource you are not going to use (reducing overhead) and prevents those sites from tracking you with fewer requests/cookies from only the sites you intend to visit. The developer posted that a user opened an issue to be able

Brave doesn’t support Procedural Cosmetics = upward property, or has-text or has or any of that. They are working on some stuff at the moment but they will support procedurals someday. Cyrille December 22, 2022, 8:08am 3 Thank you @anon57438784I installed ublock extension, added custom filters and it works now. If you want to effectively run uBlock, you can always turn off every list and only use My Filters or at least turn off Ignore generic cosmetic filters and turn on Parse and enforce cosmetic filters so uBlock won’t use resources for them. But my filters takes priority and don’t use those settings so you can have procedural cosmetics without having to apply all generic and normal cosmetics from other lists.Or you can just run my filters so you only do cosmetic filters and everything else with Brave’s adblocker, there are still some rules Brave doesn’t support, but 96% will be okay. That’s why I always have uBlock running so I can work around the features that are still not supported by Brave, but I know I can achieve the same behavior in Brave than uBlock, of course, if I need procedural cosmetics since they are not going to have a workaround if they cover too many things I will still be forced to use uBlock. But hopefully early next year Brave get support for Procedurals so uBlock will be less useful for Brave users. fanboynz December 22, 2022, 9:03am 5 youtube.com##[is-shorts] in brave://adblock would cover homepage shorts, while not quite as comprensive, its something. system Closed January 21, 2023, 9:03am 6 This topic was automatically closed 30 days after the last reply. UBlock Origin 1.13.0 is a new version of the popular content blocking extension for Firefox and Google Chrome web browsers. It introduces two new features to the extension: Element Zapper and CSP filtering. The latest version of uBlock Origin is already listed on the official Chrome Web Store and Mozilla AMO website. Interested users can download it from the extension stores, existing users may use the automatic update functionality of the browser to update to the new version. The new version of the content blocker ships with two new features that will benefit users of the extension. Update: Chrome users here on Ghacks have reported issues with the new version. The update corrups the extension so that it is deactivated automatically in Chrome. You may want to wait for a patch before you make the update. Element Zapper Element Zapper has been designed to remove elements on web pages that you open temporarily. While you can hide elements on web pages temporarily using Developer Tools, the main benefit that Element Zapper offers is that it simplifies this process. Click on the uBlock Origin icon in the browser's address bar, and select the new Element Zapper icon (the lightning icon) to make use of it. This enables the element picker mode. Move the mouse cursor over the element that you want to remove from the page -- an overlay, annoying advertisement, auto-playing video, an image, or any other element -- and click on it. The element is removed right away, and
