From the very first commercially released SSL 4000 B console in 1976 and through many generations of SSL consoles that have followed since, the Bus Compressor has always been the stalwart of the console centre section. In 1991, when SSL took its first steps into the analogue outboard world, the FX G384 saw the Bus Compressor put into rackmount form, meaning that studios without SSL consoles could use it. In 2002, the FX G384 received a face-lift, with a new silver front panel taking it into the X Logic era and this was followed by the multi-channel 5.1 version the following year. In 2007, the Bus Compressor became available as double-width module for the X-Rack series and in 2013, the Bus Compressor made it’s way into the ever-popular 500-series format. Even if you’ve never had chance to experience SSL Bus Compressor ‘in real life’, then you will have undoubtedly come across it in plug-in form, perhaps by using the SSL Native Bus Compressor 2. One thing is for sure, throughout the course of music production history, the Bus Compressor has always been the de facto choice for gluing a mix together. Creating The Ultimate For the past two and a half years we’ve been hard at work engineering The Bus+, on a mission to create the ultimate and most versatile incarnation of the Bus Compressor ever seen. The bedrock of the design remains faithful, as it always has done, to the original circuit and using this base as the starting point, we’ve built upon it, adding a number of unique colouration options. #61 I personally prefer all three of the SSL brand channel strips over the UAD/Native SSL and I do have the UAD Channel Strip/Comp Bundle as well. [...] At the end of the mix day I find I like the sound of the SSL brand better and they are much easier and quicker to dial in what you want. Quite the opposite here. That's why it's good to have options. #62 That’s my only problem with this. I wouldn’t mind paying 10$ for an upgrade but I don’t need the bus compressor. I only own the channel strip. It's the best ITB SSL bus comp still. #63 It's the best ITB SSL bus comp still. Why you think it’s better than other? Does it keep better transient? Saturation? Fat? I like the Waves but until now I alwas used the tk hardware #64 It's the best ITB SSL bus comp still. Best is subjective! It is good though. Like you said it is good to have options. Not the best to my ears but when I'm working on a song I'm looking for what can bring about the sound I'm looking for and today I have found there are many brands of plugins that can do that. There are a lot of factors that weigh in on what's sounds best. Genre, etc. For me til this day there has not been one plugins that fits all situation. I have no go to. I like the Waves but until now I alwas used the tk hardware I work and have worked with lots of different hardware SSL comps over the years (X-Rack, AWS console, Smart C1, Nekotronics, Stam...) and to this day the UAD is the only one I'd trust to replace any of my hardware units in a mix. It doesn't always sound, but definitely "feel" the same. No other plugin does this for me. #66 Best is subjective! It is good though. Like you said it is good to have options. A dime. They even just released a new version, so pick it up for free and try it on your vocals.VCA CompressorWhat Are VCA CompressorsVCA, or Voltage Controlled Amplifier compressors offer fast, low distortion, and transparent compression. They are similar to optical compressors in that they won’t color your audio much. At the same time though they can operate much faster, making them effective for taming peaks on individual tracks or busses without altering the sonic quality of your audio. When to Use VCA CompressorsAs I just mentioned, VCA compressors are good for taming aggressive transients and peaks when that’s all you want.Use it on an individual track or a bus which is still a bit too dynamic.Best VCA CompressorWaves SSL G Master Bus Compressor – When I need a bit of bus glue, I like the Waves SSL to tie things together. Based on the SSL 4000 G console and as the name suggests, this is great at or near the end of your master bus chain to provide that extra bit of unity to a mix that needs a touch more control and impact.Free VCA CompressorMost DAWs come with serviceable free VCA compressors. Ableton Live in particular comes with a solid VCA which is simply called the “Glue Compressor”.Vari Mu CompressorWhat as a Vari Mu CompressorA Vari Mu compressor, also known as a variable mu compressor, is amongst the oldest forms of compression and is based on tubes. A mix to see if it adds colour when you just insert it, but with a Solo, you can only load ONE instance. The demo is expired by now. The Waves SSL EV2 colours a mix just from inserting the plugin on every track nicely, but I got out from Waves since I don't want to pay WUP all the time. At the moment, I use Slate Digital's VCC to create such a "console sound", however, since this is meanwhile the only plugin I still use from them, I canceled my subscription and would love to replace VCC with something else.Therefore... does the E Channel colour the sound when you just insert it across the whole mix on every track, or is it "clean" and just gives you the EQ and compression curves, and maybe some distortion when you crank up the mic pre? If so, how strong is the coloration when you load approx. 20- 30 instances? Very subtle or very obvious? Yes, it does colour the sound. But there's no way you're gonna it across the board on a 60+ channel mix. If you want that, definitely demo the bx_SSL 4000E (or one of the other SSLs) and check out the TMT feature which is exactly what you're looking for. They are on sale and quite cheap regularly.Happy to hear you noticed how good the bus comp is. That something you heard the contenders missing is called mojo. #78 So much of the “SSL sound” is from the dbx gold can VCA’s in the centre section. The sunming amps clipping and distorting is the sound I think of. Summing itself doesn’t sound like anything, but these VCA’s do affect things a lot. I’ve heard this side by side with OG’s and it gets really close: obviously more to it than that but chasing down the perfect channelstrip or bus compressor isn’t going to make much difference (they’re all solid, and their use will depend on the source material). #79 I'm really loving the SSL E having been a big fan of the SSL native version for the past couple of years. I'm curious, for UAD native users, what instances would folks switch between Line & Mic? #80 I'm really loving the SSL E having been a big fan of the SSL native version for the past couple of years. How to Get SSL Native for Freeīehind every song you’re singing in the car, there’s an expensive array of equipment used in the mix. If you’re someone who is awed by using the SSL channel strip and bus comp in every mix and is an integral component in your workflow, then this emulator is worth a look. On the right side, there are the standard controls – release, attack threshold, ratio makeup gain, and a huge glowing button to bypass the comp. It comes with a large VU meter to the left, along with an additional side-chain filter as well as a dry/wet knob. Like that channel strip, it appears stunning, especially on a high-resolution screen such as a retina display. It lets you select to use the filters as well as the EQ to alter this side-chain sound. this plugin just brings them into the contemporary and design.Īt the bottom of the screen, there’s a presets menu and an easy method to choose the path of the signal that lets you switch between the EQ, dynamics, and filter sections. This bundle is the most authentic version of tools with the track record of a reputable company and history. If you’re struggling difficult to decide which one you want then perhaps an official emulator by the original creators would meet your requirements for authenticity. #Waves ssl e channel free download software There are numerous hardware and software emulators of their famous channel strip and bus compressor that have made it difficult to make a clear option. It is no secret that the name SSL stands for quality, reliability, and tradition and is an essential part of nearly every engineer’s toolbox. I like it better than the Waves E-Channel simply because the Waves model of analog hardware hasn’t been upgraded since its introduction in 2006. Its Native Channel Strip has this very wide sound and is by quite a long way the most music-oriented EQ section you’ll ever get access to. It is possible to boost 8kHz up to 10 decibels and.
