Not sure if that's still true. I was going to buy one of their monitors, perhaps the 213T, i don't remember.... I was very impressed by the contrast ratio (?) spec, but it turns out that this particular spec was published/promoted in error. It wasn't as high (good) as Samsung had reported. They admitted the error, but i don't know if this was ever corrected on the website and in various retailers' ads/listings.I had to speak with two or three people at Samsung to get the proper story. You. I ended up getting the Apple Cinema Display (22"). If you're on a Mac platform, i'd recommend going with an Apple monitor. I had some trouble with my video card killing my screens, and found out the monitor replacement service of Samsung to be very good. Replacement monitors sent within 3 working days.The other thing I noticed with Samsung is that I have hardly any dead pixels. Out of 5 panels, I have about 2 stuck pixels. This is in contrast to the one Viewsonic 191B that I also had which had about 5 dead pixels. Contrast ratios(250:1, 400:1, etc.) are always going to be off to a degree. In fact, I am willing to bet 90% of all LCDs out there have MUCH higher/lower published contrast ratios than the actual performance. This is not just the Samsung 213T, this is EVERY monitor. I agree with you that too much contrast may be hard on the eyes, in fact, it sometimes makes it hard to see the brightest and darkest shades of gray (at least on my monitor), meaning it compromises dynamic range. However, this is at the maximum setting, so it can be adjusted. Dell's 1702FP has a tested 892:1 contrast ratio, but I have never heard it to have "stellar" image quality. The actual introduction of the panel occurred back in October of 2002. However, that does not make it any less capable than other panels we have seen. The LTM213U4-L01 design is comparable to other LCD designs we have seen in smaller sizes; 2x3 CCFT backlights, 85 degree universal viewing angle, 8-bit (16.7M) color replication.We have mentioned some other display modes in the past. AUO's modified TN mode powered the Hitachi CML174 LCD with a 16ms TrTf response time. The Dell 2001FP uses an LG Philips LCD based on an IPS derivative. Samsung's PVA, Pattern Vertical Alignment, is a derivative of the VA display mode. For those a little more interested in the panel, we highly recommend checking out the panel datasheet which has plenty of very specific test procedures and specifications. Any aspiring electrical drafters are encouraged to check out page 22.Our only real complaint about this panel is the start up time. Granted, the start up time does not typically come to mind as a critical purchasing decision. However, do consider whenever the monitor goes on standby, the panel completely powers down. This was an enormous annoyance to us in the lab as we constantly were waiting for the monitor to power up after going on standby.Screen uniformity was very good. Occasionally we could spot the backlights through the TFT. We do not expect that most people would notice the difference; particularly if the screen is not a full solid dark color.
