Suit. I can easily focus on my Quran reflections and block out my worries of the day or any errands that are running through my mind on a typical day.So try to recite the Quran before you start reflecting on it. It helps you familiarize with the Arabic of the Quran too if that is not your native language like me. Don’t worry if you are still learning how to recite, we are all on a learning journey. Just go at your own pace. Allah looks at your efforts, not the result. 🙂3. Read the Translations & TafsirRead translation of the verses you recited and see what resonates with you. What do you find interesting?Pick the verses that stand out to you and read the tafsir on it. It is important that you first read the tafsir of the verses that you are going to reflect on so that you don’t misinterpret its meanings.Sometimes, even when we mean well, we may not fully understand the Quran verses just by merely reading its translations. We need to get the right tafsir to help us understand the whole context of a surah or verse.I recommed tafsir Ibn Kathir as that is the most reliable source of tafsir by scholars. Myislam.org has both the translations and tafsir on most ayats. You can use it for reference.4. Reflect/TadabburThis is a blessed Book which We revealed to you, so that they reflect upon its verses, and those with understanding may take heed” (38:29).This is the best part. Write down the verse/verses that you want to reflect on. You can write the Arabic or just the translation. Start reflecting on it. The term is Tadabbur, meaning to reflect on the verses of the Quran to seek guidance from it.You can ask yourself these questions as prompts:– Why did Allah ask Prophet ______ to do that?– Why did Allah say that?– What happens if we don’t do this?– What would happen if this event did not happen?– How is my life similar to this event?5. Sincere commitment to improveThe whole point of doing Quran journaling is to seek guidance from it. Maariful Quran (Urdu: معارف القرآن) is an eight-volume tafsir (exegesis) of the Quran written by Pakistani Islamic scholar Mufti Muhammad Shafi (1897–1976).The work consists of eight volumes. A detailed introduction, included at the beginning of the first volume, focuses on some of the basic issues of the Quran. Notable among them are the wahy, the modes of descent, the chronology of the revelation of the Quran, the first revealed verses (ayah), Meccan and Medinan verses, the preservation of the Quran, the printing of the Quran, the sources of tafsir, Arabic language etc. The work adopts a simple narrative style: first, several verses are provided in the original Arabic with their literal translation in Urdu; it is then followed by subject-wise discussion on almost every important issue. This narrative technique is repeated until the end. Below is the list of volumes and their contents:The first volume—Sura Al-Fatiha and sura Al-BaqaraThe second volume – from sura Al-Imran to sura An-NisaThe third volume – from sura Al-Ma’ida to sura Al-A’rafThe fourth volume – from sura Al-Anfal to sura HudThe fifth volume – from sura Yusuf to sura Al-KahfThe sixth volume – from sura Maryam to sura Ar-RumThe seventh volume – from sura Luqman to sura Al-AhqafThe eighth volume – from sura Muhammad to Surat al-Nas. Umar al-Razi, known as Fakhr al-Din. This monumental work has long been acknowledged as one of the core texts in the genre of Quranic commentary. It is renowned for its profound insights into the Quran, but it is far more than a traditional exegesis. The work encompasses an array of subjects, including Arabic linguistics, comparative jurisprudence, Islamic philosophy, dialectical theology, and Sufism, making it a comprehensive compendium of knowledge.Imam Fakhr al-Din al-Razi was a prolific author and a prominent proponent of the Ash’ari school of theology and the Shafi’i school of Law. His background and extensive education prepared him for the intellectual rigors of the time, and he developed a reputation as an eminent scholar during his lifetime. His deep engagement with philosophy, theology, jurisprudence, and his spiritual sensitivity positioned him as a leading figure in the Islamic intellectual tradition. Additionally, his mastery of the Arabic language, especially in relation to the Quran, set him apart as a linguistic virtuoso. The translation of “The Great Exegesis” into English is a significant endeavor. While the translation of the Quran into English dates back to the 17th century and has gained momentum over the past half-century, the translation of Islamic exegeses, particularly that of Fakhr al-Din al-Razi, has received far less attention. Al-Razi’s “al-Tafsir al-Kabir” is considered one of the most crucial exegeses due to its size, scope, and depth. The original editions of this work were formidable, often spanning multiple volumes without proper indexing, making it a challenging text to navigate. What sets al-Razi’s “The Great Exegesis” apart is its comprehensive approach, encompassing various subjects beyond traditional Quranic commentary. This all-encompassing approach has led to a humorous yet telling adage critic among scholars that al-Razi’s tafsir includes everything except tafsir. While this statement is a humorous exaggeration, it captures the depth and breadth of the work. Imam al-Razi’s expertise in multiple subjects, his holistic vision of the Quranic text, his analytical prowess, and his linguistic skills distinguish his exegesis from others. In the text, the importance of al-Razi’s tafsir is highlighted by Professor Muhammad Abdel Haleem, the King Fahd Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of London. Professor Haleem emphasizes that if he had to choose only one tafsir to rely on, he would readily select al-Razi’s. This attests to the significance of al-Razi’s work in the field of Quranic commentary and Islamic scholarship.Translating “The Great Exegesis” into English is no small feat. It requires a deep understanding and appreciation of the various disciplines covered in the tafsir, a profound knowledge of Arabic at the level used by al-Razi, and mastery of the English language to convey the nuances of theComments
