PCMark 8 - PCMark 8 Update Released - Steam News

Home> Benchmarks by Jarred Walton on October 21, 2013 2:20 PM EST Posted in Benchmarks Futuremark PCMark 8 We’ve had a “preview” release of PCMark 8 for a few months now, but Futuremark was still working on a few minor issues it seems – plus the pending release of Windows 8.1 likely created a reason for delaying the public launch. Today it appears everything is finally in order and PCMark 8 Basic and Advanced editions are now available. (Sort of…Futuremark’s web page was being updated briefly and the Steam store pages aren’t live, but I suspect those will go up some time today. Update: And the Steam page is live now.) PCMark 8 follows in the steps of the latest 3DMark with a modified user interface that is more touchscreen friendly. It also breaks up the benchmark into five tests: Home, Creative, Work, Storage, and Applications. The Creative test is a superset of the Home and Work tests, and likewise Home is a superset of Work, but the overall scores in each category can still vary depending on the capabilities of the device being tested. Storage naturally focuses on your storage device, and it can take a while to run on an SSD never mind waiting around for a hard drive. The Applications suite is the one item I have yet to test, as it requires Microsoft Office (2010 or later) and Adobe Creative Cloud (or later) in order to run. Also included as part of the overall package are battery life tests for the Home, Creative, and Work suites. In terms of what you get with PCMark 8, the Basic edition only includes the Home, Creative, and Work benchmarks, along with the battery life tests. The Advanced version adds the Storage and Applications suites. Basic is available for free – either from the Steam PCMark 8 page or from one of the download mirrors. The Advanced edition is priced at $49.95 regularly, but there’s a sale going on right now on Steam that will save you 25%, or a price of $37.49. You can see results for PCMark 8

Invaluable to them when it came to testing laptops and netbooks. In the end, PCMark 10 does do what it aims for and offers office professionals - especially those in the IT department - help with identifying a good, balanced set of PC hardware or OEM towers to purchase based on application. The price tag for the Advanced Edition will more than make up for the cost savings in the long run, and many companies may well want to consider the Professional Edition as well depending on usage and support needs. For readers of TechPowerUp and those interested in benching hardware and comparing results, PCMark 10 Basic Edition alone offers a lot. As a free benchmark, PCMark 10 will do the job for a lot of people if combined with the free 3DMark Fire Strike benchmark as well. But PCMark 10 Advanced Edition is for those whose time is valuable or who simply want more analysis and a combined benchmark. I am not convinced it will be worth $29.99 to you, but hey, it is available on Steam as well, so it is only a matter of time before it goes on sale.Update (June 5, 2017): Futuremark informed us that dedicated storage and battery tests will indeed be coming to PCMark 10. These will be included for customers with the Advanced or Professional Editions, similar to PCMark 8, which helps further justify the $29.99 price tag. The reason they were not included at launch is because Futuremark is giving them a major update to fit in with the rest of PCMark 10, and R&D was not completed by today. Given this piece of information, I am now more inclined to purchase the Advanced Edition as a reviewer and bencher.. PCMark 8 . Date released: (8 years ago) Download. PCMark 8 . PCMark 10 Basic and Advanced release June 22, 2017 and will cost $0 and $29.99 respectively.New and improved workloads vs. PCMark 8No more confusion between having to choose Accelerated vs. Conventional modesFaster to install, run and analyze vs. PCMark 8More analysis options in the program itself, as well as onlineRemoval of some dedicated tests, including storage and battery life, vs. PCMark 8Reliance on open-source programs means the digital content creation group no longer uses popular Adobe and Microsoft applicationsNo support for more than a thread/CPU core and more than a GPUAlmost four years later, Futuremark has released the next iteration to their PCMark benchmarking program. That is not to say they have done nothing in four years as the hardware world changes far too often to stay dormant. Futuremark has released VRMark, updated 3DMark to include some benchmarks for VR and also DX12, and did release more mobile-centric benchmarks. PCMark 8 was lagging behind in use, with 3DMark doing a lot already and people preferring individual application benchmarking vs. a full suite that was getting dated.PCMark 10 is a strong attempt to get PCMark back into not just hardware reviewers' hands, but also office and home professionals alike. Gone are the storage and battery tests, but in return, you get more real-world testing in digital content creation, simulations and modeling, and an entire gaming group, while still retaining the essentials and productivity groups that contain tasks a lot of us do daily and rarely think about if running slowly. The extended analysis is a great help in identifying bottlenecks or the lack thereof, and it also is useful when it comes to building a balanced system. To start things off and get a sense for how the ThinkPad X280's storage components perform, we fired-up ATTO for a quick sanity check on sequential disk transfer speeds across various file sizes, with both read and write workloads.ATTO Disk Benchmark, Testing NVMe Solid State StorageThe ATTO Disk benchmark measures sequential transfer speeds on a drive with a range of file sizes. By the time it hit 128KB and larger transfers, the read speed of the Samsung SSD in the X280 blew past 2500 MB/s and stayed there for the duration, peaking at almost 3000 MB/s with the 16MB file test. In the meantime, writes climbed to nearly 2000 MB/s by the time file size hit 64KB, and remained consistent for the remainder of the test.Cinebench R15Cinebench R15 is a 3D rendering benchmark that tests both the CPU and GPU engines in the processor. Cinebench is developed by Maxon, which is better known for its Cinema 4D software employed in professional 3D rendering and animation studios. We use both of Cinebench’s integrated tests for CPU and GPU testing. The X280 put up much more respectable scores in this benchmark, hitting about the middle in terms of OpenGL rendering and overtaking all but the Dell XPS 13 (2018) in the CPU test.PCMark BenchmarksWe also ran two Futuremark PCMark system benchmarks, PCMark 8 v2 and PCMark 10. We selected the Open CL "Accelerated" modes in PCMark 8, allowing the benchmark to take advantage of current generation integrated CPU/GPU parts, and we run PCMark 10 in default mode. The X280 performed well in the trio of PCMark 8 v2 tests we ran. The systems scored 3790 in the Home Accelerated test, 4750 in the Work Accelerated test, and 5065 in the Storage test. We're not graphing the numbers because we don't have fair comparison data

Edges are bare. The Omen's wireless connectivity comes from an Intel AX200 card supporting the new Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) standard and Bluetooth 5.0. Putting On Its Game Face The Omen 17 didn't break any speed records in our performance tests, but it proved as quick as it ought to be for its hardware. The basic specifications of the gaming rigs I used for comparison are charted here: These systems are representative of the hardware you should expect around this Omen's price point. Except for the Razer, all use full-power Nvidia GPUs rather than throttled-down Max-Q versions. It'll be interesting to see how the Razer keeps up. Note that we disable Nvidia G-Sync for all testing. Storage, Media, and CPU Tests We'll begin with two PCMark tests from UL. PCMark 10 measures general system performance across simulated web browsing, office productivity, and video streaming workloads, while PCMark 8's storage subtest gauges the performance of the laptop's boot drive. The Omen 17 proudly led the pack in PCMark 10, scoring well above the 4,000-point threshold we consider the mark of a high-performance PC. Its 256GB PCIe drive mingled with the others in PCMark 8's storage exercise, where most fast SSDs generally score in the neighborhood of 5,000 points. Next, we have a pair of CPU-driven tests. The Cinebench R15 benchmark stresses all the processor's cores and threads while rendering a three-dimensional image. In Handbrake, we see how long it takes to encode a 12-minute clip of 4K video down to 1080p. While

The tedious task of re-testing many of the drives that we’ve been sampled over the past couple years. That means each drive was secure erased and had its firmware updated if a newer build was available. The move over to a new test system also gave us the chance to update and improve our test suite. One of the big wishes from the community that we’ve heard loud and clear is that we need to move from PCMark 8 to PCMark 10.PCMark 8 was originally introduced in 2013 and the storage test uses only one thread to do everything. We are by no means living in the single-core era thanks to corporations like AMD offering CPUs with higher core counts than ever before. PCMark 10 Storage uses all the CPU cores available on the platform being tested and has been validated to support up to 5GB/s bandwidth. About half the available cores/threads are being used for generating the data needed for I/O and the other half are tasked with sending out I/Os. The I/O in both PCMark 8 and PCMark 10 is asynchronous. That means that the thread sending an I/O does not sit waiting for it to complete, but can instead queue more I/O to match the queue depth in the recorded trace. The CPU thread count used by the benchmark does not equal to the queue depth seen by the storage device. Most modern software has been written to be a muilthreaded solution where it can push IOs from multiple threads. This should play top the strengths of NVMe devices that have come out in recent years as they were designed to handle multiple queues at the same time. So, the take home message here is that PCMark 10 takes advantage of all available threads and uses newer real-world traces. We started off testing 960GB to 1TB SSDs on the new system since that is one of the most popular capacities for enthusiasts right now. The first eight storage drives that we tested on the new SSD test system are listed below along with the respective firmware that they. PCMark 8 . Date released: (8 years ago) Download. PCMark 8 . Transfer Rate Version and / or Patch Used: 2.6.2.0We use DiskBench to time a 28.6GB block (9,882 files in 1,247 folders) composed primarily of incompressible sequential and random data as it's transferred from our DC P3700 PCIe NVME SSD to our test drive. We then read from a 6GB zip file that's part of our 28.6GB data block to determine the test drive's read transfer rate. Our system is restarted prior to the read test to clear any cached data, ensuring an accurate test result. Write Transfer Rate Read Transfer Rate Throughout our testing one thing has remained consistent, the RD400's deliver better write performance and the 950 Pro's better read performance. However, our transfer testing does not follow this established pattern. All three RD400's deliver better read transfer rates than the 950 Pros. They even deliver better read transfer rates than Intel's 750 1.2TB behemoth. The 256GB RD400 easily dispatches the 950 Pro 256GB with both read and write transfers, which is unexpected. We expected the 256GB 950 Pro to have superior read transfer rate, but it does not - it is 200MB/s slower than the RD400 256GB.The larger capacity RD400's completely reverse the established pattern. They both deliver better read transfer rates than the 512GB 950 Pro, but lower write transfer rates. As expected, Intel's 750 provides the best write transfer rates of our test pool. Benchmarks (Secondary Volume) - PCMark 8 Extended Futuremark PCMark 8 Extended Heavy Workload Model PCMark 8's consistency test simulates an extended duration heavy workload environment. PCMark 8 has built-in, command line executed storage testing. The PCMark 8 Consistency test measures the performance consistency and the degradation tendency of a storage system. The Storage test workloads are repeated. Between each repetition, the storage system is bombarded with a usage that causes degraded drive performance. In the first part of the test, the cycle continues until a steady degraded level of performance has been reached. (Steady State)In the second part, the recovery of the system is tested by allowing the system to idle and measuring the performance after 5-minute long intervals. (Internal drive maintenance: Garbage Collection (GC)) The test reports the performance level at the start, the degraded steady-state, and the recovered state, as well as the number of iterations required to reach the degraded state and the recovered state. We feel Futuremark's Consistency Test is the best test ever devised to show the true.
