“This is a full-on mini race bike.”If you think full-grown adults have no business racing 175cc play bikes, a host of pro racers and amateur flat track stars are here to prove you wrong. Mad Dog racing has quickly one of the most popular, most competitive classes in all of flat track. The bikes must start life as 156cc or less — a number based on the stock displacement of the Honda CRF150F — and the engine must be an air-cooled, two-valve four-stroke that can be modified up to 175cc. No age limits, no license required, and some of the most competitive bar-to-bar action you’re likely to see in any form of two-wheeled motorsport. “Welcome to the wondrous, often insane world of Mad Dog flat-track racing. This is pure racing on small bikes where technique and skill reigns even more supreme than it does in other forms of motorcycle sport.” —Cycle NewsA rider can pick up a 2003-05 CRF150F, thrown on a 175cc big-bore kit and a Bridgestone Trail Wing rear tire, and go racing. Of course, some racers end up putting an inordinate amount of cash into these small bikes, while others build their own.Enter our friend Jake Drummond, one of the custom world’s brightest young builders, whose stunning Yamaha RD350 we featured back in 2018. Since then, Jake has built a Yamaha MT-07 with a custom aluminum perimeter frame — “The Omen” — which was featured on Bike EXIF, and he recently took a very exciting new “real job”:“After nine years working for Sonex Aircraft building experimental aircraft and UAVs, I took a job with Polaris/Indian running the metal shop for the Industrial Design Department.”Jake has also been hard at work on a Honda Hawk GT project for our friends at Cafe Racers of Instagram. But at some point, the Mad Dog itch came along, inspired by builder, racer, and friend of the blog August of Wisconsin’s Rosies Speed Shop:“I was inspired by my buddy August Zeratsky. He built a 140cc flat tracker using a CL90 frame. It looked like such a fun bike to piece together and ride. With the new EP8 e-bike system, SHIMANO has not just shredded up the e-bike rulebook, it’s written an entirely new version. No longer will you lack confidence – or stamina – to tackle the steepest, most leg-sapping climbs, and gone are the days of uncontrollable power. Instead, you are in control of the amount of assist, using the extra boost when you need it most. Whatever type of rider you are – whether you spend every spare minute at work thinking about the best line to take down your favorite trail or you use your bike for your commute into work – SHIMANO EP8 will revolutionize your ride. Not only is it light, powerful and features increased battery life, but it is also fully customizable via the easy-to-use E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist for mobile (Ver. 4.0.0). SHIMANO’s E-TUBE software connects you to your bike via a wireless link to your smartphone. Once you’re hooked up, you’ll be able to get even more out of your riding experience. Seasons change, sometimes within the course of a week, riding conditions vary and moods alter – some days you simply want to get out and shred the trails fast and hard, other times you crave a leisurely cruise to take it easy and soak up new surroundings. SHIMANO’s E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist App makes it simple to customize your bike’s settings to suit what lies ahead before you even get in the saddle. The advanced levels of customization mean that you can easily adjust your bike’s settings to match your riding style. Aside from being able to tweak assist characteristics, functions of the assist switch and display, you can also adjust other controls, from basic settings such as language and background to more advanced settings such as automatic shifting. The latest version of the E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist App features an updated visual interface, meaning it’s even easier to use, and errors are identified immediately so you can fix them straight away. You can also easily check for the latest firmware releases, ensuring that your unit is fully up-to-date with the newest functionality at all times. If you love to tweak settings, you’ll be in your element – the range of customization available will convert even the biggest of e-bike skeptics. You can customize each power assist level (Eco, Boost & Trail), resulting in 10 levels of assist character in total. Torque assist is applied according

The combination of Shimano's Di2 electronic groupsets and its E-TUBE PROJECT app provides unparalleled synchronization and customization between components, cycling computers, and smartphones. This integration allows riders to gather more data and fine-tune shifting performance whatever the ride. Unlock the full potential of Shimano's Di2 groupsets just by downloading and connecting your group to the E-TUBE PROJECT app. Pair Your Bike’s Shifters and Derailleurs for Wireless Performance For first-time E-TUBE PROJECT app users, you'll start by selecting your region and filling in basic information with the app. If you're setting up a 12-speed Di2 group, you’ll want to pair your bike’s shifters and derailleurs so the components can communicate and change gears wirelessly. If you purchased your bike as a complete bike, this pairing would likely have already been done by the manufacturer or bike shop where you bought your bike. Shimano’s 12-speed Di2 systems communicate wirelessly between the shifters and derailleurs and can communicate directly with the E-TUBEPROJECT app for further pairing and customization. Shimano 11-speed Di2 groups can still use the E-TUBE PROJECT app for these customizations. However, these groups require a WU-111 “D-Fly” to be wired into the system in order to communicate wirelessly. IntroductionFor mountain bikers, the electrification of cycling offers a world of custom settings and options that you can control from the palm of your hand. The Shimano E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist app gives you ultimate control over your ride. From fine-tuning Shimano DEORE XT Di2’s AUTO SHIFT functionality to optimizing the power delivered by the Shimano EP8 or EP6 motor, set it up your way using custom profiles that are easy to switch between.STEPS e-bike motor customizationWe sat down with Shimano product developers Pim Keunen and Rob Busser to explore the opportunities e-bike customization has to offer. “Shimano STEPS e-bike systems make riding a richer experience – for even more people,” Keunen told us. “With the E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist mobile application, you can customize the power delivery and battery management, to get even more out of your ride. Utilizing the app’s two profile options, you can create distinct settings for different types of riding, either by using the pre-set assist, torque and start-assist settings, or by fine-tuning those metrics yourself.” Range or power?“You may want to set up personalized profiles for your e-MTB,” Keunen continued, “in order to maximize your battery range or to power your ride to the fullest when taking on technical mountain bike climbs. By being able to set up and use two different profiles, both options are possible – even during the same ride. Take to the trails using Profile 1’s conservative settings and switch to the more powerful settings of Profile 2 to maximize torque assistance provided by the STEPS motor.” The perfect startFor e-MTB beginners and e-bike commuters, the ability to set the Assist Start you want to receive from the motor is exceptionally useful,” Rob Busser added. “For a smooth acceleration from a standing start, you can tune the Assist Start to a lower setting, while for e-MTB riders, a faster acceleration will help you get going on those steep inclines.”BASIC vs FINE TUNE ModeThe E-TUBE PROJECT Cyclist app allows riders to select three different parameters within the three classic, pre-set modes of the BASIC Mode settings. This is ideal for riders who are new to e-bikes and not entirely familiar with the power of riding electric. For those already comfortable with an e-bike and Shimano STEPS technology, FINE TUNE MODE provides even more personalization options. Riders can set up to 15 different assist characteristics and tweak the seven original assist support levels. In each of your two profiles, you can select the assist characteristics, including minimum and maximum torque. This way, you can prepare for, and adapt to, different challenges you might encounter in the same ride. BASIC MODERiders can adjust three parameters within the 3 classical assist modesEach levels can be customized. Mt Canobolas mountain bike project: the story so far.
