The atlas set, available in both Chinese and English, includes the Geological Atlas of the Lunar Globe and the Map Quadrangles of the Geological Atlas of the Moon, the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Geochemistry said. "The geological atlas of the moon is of great significance for studying the evolution of the moon, selecting the site for a future lunar research station and utilizing lunar resources," said Ouyang Ziyuan, a CAS academician and lunar scientist."It can also help us better understand the Earth and other planets in the solar system, such as Mars. Liu Jianzhong, a senior researcher at the institute, said:"The world has witnessed significant progress in the field of lunar exploration and scientific research over the past decades, which has greatly improved our understanding of the moon. However, the lunar geological maps published during the Apollo era have not been changed for about half a century, and are still being used for lunar geological research. With the improvements of lunar geological studies, those old maps can no longer meet the needs of future scientific research and lunar exploration." Since 2012, Ouyang and Liu have led a team of scientists and cartographers from various research institutions in efforts to compile the atlas. With a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the origin and evolution of the moon, the team compiled the atlas based on scientific exploration data gained from China's Chang'e lunar exploration program and other research results from Chinese and international missions, Liu said. This atlas set not only provides basic data and scientific references for the formulation and implementation of scientific goals in China's lunar exploration program, but also fills a blank in China's compilation of geological maps of the moon and planets, contributing to the study of the origin and evolution of the moon and the solar system, Liu said. Based on the perspective of lunar dynamic evolution, Chinese researchers creatively established an updated lunar geological time scale, objectively depicting the geological evolution of the moon, and clearly showing the characteristics of lunar tectonic and magmatic evolution. "One of our primary objectives is to identify safe landing sites for future human return to the moon. The Apollo program accepted risk and was able to have safe landings. We want to return to the moon, make repeated landings in some areas and be able to go there with a higher degree of safety." LRO was launched by an Atlas 5 rocket from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station last Thursday along with a companion spacecraft, the $79 million Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, or LCROSS. The two spacecraft separated shortly after launch. LCROSS is designed to guide the Atlas 5's spent Centaur second stage to an impact in a permanently shadowed crater near the moon's south pole on October 9. Instruments aboard LCROSS, LRO, the Hubble Space Telescope and at observatories on Earth will study the debris thrown up by the crash to look for evidence of ice, a critical resource for future outposts. But if you’re not an early riser, you can soon rejoice — it will become visible in the evening sky starting Oct. 14. On that date, the comet will be in the far eastern part of the constellation Virgo. On the 15th, it will have crossed the border into Serpens, and for observers in the Eastern time zone, it will lie a bit more than 1° south of globular cluster M5. If the comet is bright enough, both objects could be viewed simultaneously through binoculars. In the western U.S., Tsuchinshan-ATLAS’ motion will place it slightly southeast of M5.When you should look for the cometComet brightnesses are notoriously difficult to predict, but if the main body of Tsuchinshan-ATLAS holds together, we might be treated to a bright celestial sight. Unfortunately, when to view the comet will be something each observer would be wise to consider for two reasons.First, there’s the Moon. It will be Full Oct. 17, right in the middle of the best viewing period for Tsuchinshan-ATLAS. After that date, our satellite will rise later each evening, making viewing the comet much easier.Second, the comet never climbs high in the sky. On Oct. 15, Tsuchinshan-ATLAS will be 16° high in the west one hour after sunset. An hour past sunset, the comet will be 28° high in the west and will lie quite close to the magnitude 3.8 star Marfik (Lambda [λ] Ophiuchi). Observers are hoping it will be much brighter than the star.The comet will continue to move through Ophiuchus and, on the 28th, it will lie between two of that constellation’s brightest stars: magnitude 2.8 Cebelrai and magnitude 3.7 Muliphen (Beta [β] and Gamma [γ] Ophiuchi). The stellar pair is separated by 2°. On that night, the comet will stand 40° high in the southwest an hour after sunset.The prolific comet discoverer David Levy likes to say, “Comets are like cats.
