Learning how to self-publish a book may seem like a daunting undertaking. But today, it’s never been easier. Self-publishing and print-on-demand platforms make creating and self-publishing a book accessible to anyone with a vision. All it takes is an idea and the drive to bring your book to life, whether it be a photo book, memoir, or short story. In this getting-started guide, we take the guesswork out of the publishing process and show you how to self-publish a book on your terms. First, let’s cover some self-publishing basics. What is self-publishing?Self-publishing is the process of producing and publishing creative work without the support of a traditional publishing house. For authors, it means taking ownership of the writing and editing and the book’s design, formatting, printing, and promotion. And it’s in that journey where self-published authors can explore creativity without boundaries. With the rise of online publishing tools and distribution platforms in the past decade, self-publishing has become a viable and economical option for many authors. Writers and creatives prefer the self-publishing route for several reasons: Not only does it allow you to retain creative control and a greater share of the profits, but it’s a practical alternative for creators sharing perspectives on niche topics with very targeted audiences—the kind that wouldn’t get picked up by traditional publishers.A brief history of self-publishingSelf-publishing has a long history that dates back to the 17th century when many authors printed and distributed their books and pamphlets without a publisher. Some early examples of these. Mark Dawson on self-publishing. Posted . BACK TO THE HUB. Self-publishing on a grand scale . We meet indie authors at all stages of their careers and ask them a series of five questions. Five questions about their process, their mistakes, and their successes. Five answers that will help you level up your own author career. My name is Tom Ashford, and I’m part of the self publishing formula. Don’t forget that you can get your self publishing resource kit at selfpublishingformula.com/starterkit. This week’s guest is Roseanne Cheng. Thank you for having me.Tom Ashford: Not a problem. It’s great to have you on. Do you want to talk a little bit, maybe about your middle-grade fiction and nonfiction books?Roseanne Cheng: Sure, yeah. I have a strange writing journey myself, and it’s kind of taken me on different paths. It all started with middle-grade fiction. I was a teacher for seven years, and I just had this book idea in my head. I really wanted to write a book that I wanted to teach in the classroom, meaning I would have something that would spark a lot of conversations. The chapters would be perfect homework-length chapters. I would have just the right amount of vocabulary sprinkled in there, essential questions, so all the things that a teacher kind of looks for when they’re just using literature to teach in the classroom. I wrote my first book, which is called The Take Back of Lincoln Junior High, and it’s about a middle school, a junior high school that takes corporate sponsors over federal funding. And I really just wanted to spark a conversation with kids about what money does buy and what it doesn’t buy in education.I wrote that book. I created kind of a teacher’s guide in the back for it. I did a lot of visits to classrooms and talking to teachers and students about how to use the book in their classroom. That one inspired my second book, which is called Edge The Bare Garden, and that one is also a middle-grade fiction book about digital citizenship, another topic I liked to discuss in the classroom. What happened after I published those two books and went through all the marketing for it and really enjoyed the process is, I had just created this really close relationship with my publishers. I went through an indie hybrid publisher here locally in Minneapolis called Wise Ink Creative Publishing, and I got so close with those people who were helping me bring my books to life, that I decided that I really wanted to work with them and help other authors do the same thing that I waswith Mark Blayney - Mark Dawson's Self Publishing Formula

If you’re a seasoned indie author, there’s a chance that you’ve already used Amazon to create ads to help sell more eBooks. However, if you’re new to the writing and self-publishing game, the world of Amazon ads for authors might be totally unfamiliar to you. As the largest platform in the world for purchasing and publishing eBooks, Amazon holds a huge amount of power. Through your Kindle Direct Publishing account, you’re able to harness that power for your own benefit. (Curious how to start selling books through KDP? Check out our article on self-publishing with Amazon here). As a self-publisher on KDP, something you may have asked yourself is probably…What is the best way to promote a Kindle book?We think one of the best ways to start bringing in book sales is through advertisements, and Amazon offers some powerful ad tools. Of course, Amazon’s advertising and marketing services need a fair bit of explanation and understanding before they should be used. Becoming adept in Amazon Advertising can be greatly beneficial to the future of your book sales.Helpful tip – Before we continue, we want to explain something about Amazon’s ad platform. As Amazon Marketing Services underwent a rebranding in September 2018, the entire site was renamed “Amazon Advertising”. However, AMS and Amazon Advertising are the same site. With rebranding, though, comes change. As explained on Jane Friedman’s website (with a helpful guest post written by Dave Chesson), these recent changes resulted in new ad types and updates to the advertising dashboard. In case you were a former user of Amazon Marketing Services who has just recently returned to the site, be sure to keep this in mind. We want to be transparent with you – getting familiar with Amazon Advertising will take time and practice, and authors get mixed results. Looking for an in-depth video course on this specific subject? We recommend Mark Dawson’s Self-Publishing Formula. Mark offers a course that’s specifically focused on how to set up and optimize Amazon ads for authors, which you can access here. For a written guide on Amazon ads for authors, we encourage you to keep reading for Written Word Media’s very own how-to post. Not only will this blog post explain what Amazon Advertising is, but it will also give you tips on successful strategies for this ad platform and provide you with a detailed walkthrough of the website. Since Written Word Media runs Amazon ads of our own, we’ve been able to compile information on what’s been successful for us. We hope that our results will prove to be helpful to you, too. May we express our gratitude for your ongoing support and attention to this venture. This week, we have the company of Mark Stavish. Mark is the founder and director of The Institute for Hermetic Studies (IHS). Mark holds degrees in Theology, Communications and Counseling. He is a prolific author of depth titles on Mystery subjects, centered on Western Kabbalistic knowledge. Mark is a longtime friend of our sibling podcast, Thoth-Hermes, and a trove of additional prior conversations may be found there. The overarching theme of the next two hours centers on: “what can you handle?” It is plainspoken and direct, while brotherly and benevolent. We encourage you to listen with ears open to hear. Mark and Rudolf dive in with the starting context for the IHS: 1990s, East-Coast America. A time of in-person groups, Gnosis Magazine, and the grit of self-publishing material perhaps too deep for the balance sheets of popular booksellers. Mark shares stark realities of rejection and adaptation for the sake of creating inheritance to future Seekers- rather than status or income streams. With his characteristic energy, Mark challenges listeners throughout the dialogue. He names the essential need for Initiates to handle stark reality, including worldviews not their own, beyond personal identity and ideology. In doing so, he identifies the need to produce a life-giving vision of the future, least populations be drawn into that which appears to be but is not. As Mark states, this has little to do with who one wants to see elected US President in “the next election”. It is this call to Depth that sees Mark and Rudolf explore essential questions:What is ‘tradition’ and why is it a responsibility? What is ‘initiation’ and the mindset of a true Initiate? How does ‘virtue’ relate to potency?Mark issues the Saturnian challenge to grow past “Tik-Tok clutter” and “podcasting, publishing, and product” marketplace of Occultism. He names the Aquarian postwar Esoteric awakening as a response to mass trauma, “most vibrant when truly counter-cultural” andHome - Mark Dawson's Self Publishing Formula
The use of AI. Currently, AI policies range from very permissive, to granular divisions between where and why it is allowed or not. Across this spectrum, there are a number of scholars publishing engaging information across the disciplines. Examples include:Dr. Michelle Meadows at the University of Oxford wrote an insightful blog on How to encourage academic integrity in the age of generative AI, framing the point positively to educators to assist their thinking on the subject. Alex Steele at the University of New South Wales considered the question in the broader ambit of assessment design in law. A pre-print of his forthcoming book chapter, wherein he examines how programmatic assessment can be part of the solution, is a concept with many supporters but is as yet under-utilized. Steele argues, ‘It is written with a Law focus – but it’s broadly applicable for any discipline that is content heavy and struggling to find space for innovation’.From a different discipline, Developing Learning Skills through Multi-Part Assessment, out of the University of Sydney, examines how to increase student engagement with assessment. Scholarship demonstrates that as student engagement increases, their desire to find a shortcut decreases and instead they produce high quality submissions. Finally, a comprehensive treatment of the subject can be found in the online journal Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education. The editorial on Challenging Cheating by Phil Dawson and Mollie Dollinger is worthy of particular attention. As is the perhaps more provocative article Validity matters more than cheating, by Phil Dawson, Margaret Bearman, Mollie Dollinger and David Boud. Turning to student attitudes, it appears clear that the overwhelming majority of students don’t see AI as a panacea for outsourcing their work, with concerns about accuracy and quality of output. 8000 students across four Australian universities were asked questions on the topic.
