The USB drive UEFI/GPT as well? It sounds like it's still MBR and that can cause the UEFI to ignore it as a boot device. Use this tool and under "Partition Scheme" try making your bootable USB drive as a GPT disk. It has three options to choose from if that still does not work. Also, make sure you are still using FAT32 for the file system, NTFS won't work. The tool can make the image bootable if you directly select a bootable ISO image as well, it's a handy program for making bootable devices. Hope this helps! Would I have had different results using the executable? @kougar I'll try that out this afternoon, thanks for the tip! FWIW, you can wipe a disk and format it as GPT in Windows as well, without using a special tool. To wipe the disk, including it's formatting and boot type, run command as an admin and type diskpart, list disk, select disk #, clean. Then change the disk type in disk manager. Rufus is certainly easier, though. [edit]This doesn't explain why I wasn't able to boot from a USB CD/DVD though. AFAIK, DVDs do not use MBR or GPT to boot. The linux DVD I created, a bootable image, should work just fine regardless of CSM, uEFI, legacy, etc., right? post edited by tiberiusisgame - 2016/04/04 06:25:12 _JoseR SSC Member Total Posts : 826 Reward points : 0 Joined: 2014/04/11 09:39:05 Status: offline Ribbons : 1 Re: System refuses to boot from a USB device 2016/04/04 07:27:34 (permalink) Since you managed to update the BIOS over UEFI, it's strange that it will not allow you to boot from the USB drive but it works on another system? This means that it must already be formatted in fat32 but I suppose its worth a shot trying what kougar suggested. For best results I would recommend that you use the USB 2.0 ports on the I/O panel and make sure they are set to enable. kougar CLASSIFIED Member Total Posts : 3034 Reward points : 0 Joined: 2006/05/08 10:11:19 Status: offline Ribbons : 22 Re: System refuses to boot from a USB device 2016/04/04 07:46:47 (permalink) tiberiusisgame [edit]This doesn't explain why I wasn't able to boot from a USB CD/DVD though. AFAIK, DVDs do not use MBR or GPT to boot. The linux DVD I created, a bootable image, should work just fine regardless of CSM, uEFI, legacy, etc., right? In that specific case it is not a question of MBR or GPT, I think it is because you disabled CSM support. CSM was how "dumb" devices were able to bypass Secure Boot's protection of the system if they couldn't provide the authorization. I am. Just burning the iso to a disk won’t make the disk bootable.
