The first step was downloading the My Spectrum app and signing in. Once we got that set up, the app notified us that we had new equipment. We clicked “Set Up Equipment” and clicked again on the Receiver. From there, the app told us exactly how, step-by-step, to set it up. This included connecting the receiver to a cable outlet via a coax cable, connecting the HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV, plugging in the receiver to an electrical outlet, and putting the batteries in the remote. From there, all we had to do was turn on the TV, select the proper HDMI source, and activate the receiver on the app. All in all, it only took us a few minutes and our TV was running — with no lag or delays. TV appXumo Stream BoxAll Spanish channels such as BeIN Sports, Bandamax, and Antena 3 TVSpectrum TV StreamThe most basic cable/streaming package is TV Stream for only $40 per month. This is the only English-language month-to-month contract for you commitment-phobes out there. Plus, Spectrum now includes the Xumo Stream Box for an extra $5 a month with all of its plans. This means we can stream our favorite services like Netflix and Hulu straight from our TV — after we’ve run through the 85 channels, that is.Spectrum TV Select SignatureThe mid-tier cable streaming plan, for $95 a month with an annual contract, nearly doubles the number of channels of TV Stream. In addition, it throws on two streaming subscriptions: Disney+ Basic, meaning that it has ads, as well as something called ViX Premium With Ads. We had never heard of this streaming service before. However, upon trying it ourselves, we saw that it includes Spanish-language shows like “Lalola” and “Es Por Su Bien.” According to Verizon, the company behind ViX, it's the largest streaming platform for Spanish content in the world. Plus, it really helped us brush up before a trip to Barcelona.Spectrum TV Select PlusFinally, the créme de la créme of Spectrum is the TV Select Plus plan. It provides over 160 channels for $105 a month — annual contract required. Not only does this add on ESPN+, but it also includes regional sports networks if you don’t want to miss the local games.Spectrum TV Stream LatinoThe last option is for Spanish-speakers. For $25 a month on a flexible basis, you can get more than 45 channels, completely in Spanish, such as Bandamax and Antena 3. This is a good option if there are no English speakers in your house. But, if it’s a mix, we’d recommend either TV Select Signature or Select Plus; both include the Spanish streaming service ViX. Spectrum TV Senior Packages and DiscountsAlthough seniors can receive discounts on select Spectrum Internet plans, there are no senior-specific discounts for cable TV. If you’re looking for an affordable cable TV plan, then we’d recommend Spectrum TV Select Signature. Spectrum offers cable TV plans for seniors starting at just $40 per month. Featuring more than 160 channels, on-demand offerings, and discounts for bundling, Spectrum is a great choice for television. If you’re looking for a senior discount or plan, you’re out of luck with Spectrum TV. That said, after testing out this service, we recommend it if you want straightforward cable plus streaming. Of course, every rose has its thorn — Spectrum has some hidden fees you should know about. Let’s take a closer look at how this provider works. Spectrum Cable Pros and ConsProsStraightforward cable TV plans: Unlike other providers, which offer several packages and channel tiers to choose from, Spectrum has just three main options. It also has a few optional add-ons, such as live sports and premium channels like Max.Affordable bundles: When you pair cable with internet or home phone service, Spectrum offers a discount.Contract buyout: If you’re stuck in a contract with another cable TV provider, Spectrum will pay up to $500 for early termination fees (ETFs).Streaming box: Spectrum now offers the Xumo Stream Box on all of its plans. This means that you can stream straight on your TV — not just on your phone (although it costs an additional $5 per month).Streaming subscriptions included: The two top-tier plans gave us Disney+ and ViX Premium. For sports lovers, get the top-tier plan; it also adds ESPN+.ConsDVR service not free: While other cable TV providers offer free DVR service, Spectrum doesn’t. Instead, we had to pay to add DVR service, which starts at $4.99 per month.Hidden fees: Some Spectrum cable TV plans include a $25.75 per month broadcast fee and additional fees for installation, activation, and equipment. For more recent devices, your best option is to get to the 5 Ghz spectrum, especially if all of your equipment can support 802.11ac or newer. Soon, we will also have 6 Ghz spectrum to play with. But for the question as it relates to the 2.4 Ghz band:Stick to 1, 6, or 11!The thing to understand is the channels are only 5 Mhz wide. Channel 1, for example, centers at 2412 Mhz, and Channel 2 centers at 2417 Mhz... only 5 Mhz later. But wifi uses at least 20 Mhz of spectrum. So a wifi radio using 20 Mhz centered on Channel 1 will have signal going up to 2422 Mhz, well into Channel 3. A wifi radio centered on Channel 6 (2437 Mhz) will range down to 2426 Mhz, below Channel 4, and as high as 2448 Mhz, past Channel 8.And that assumes only 20 Mhz channel sizes. 40 Mhz is also common in the 2.4 Ghz range. If you're using 40 Mhz channels (or greater), things are limited even more.Best results come when your wifi signals do not overlap, and using only 1, 6, 11 with 20 Mhz channels gives the maximum potential. This is especially true in high-density areas, such as large apartment buildings, so for best results get your neighbors to do the same. Note that 20 Mhz channel widths will reduce the maximum theoretical speed, but it makes it more likely to have consistent reliable throughput, especially if your neighbors are on board.Of course, if you live by yourself in the middle of nowhere, feel free to run a single radio using 80 Mhz signaling on whatever channel you want.Even if other channels seem less crowded, remember that because channels overlap you still have to deal with interference from those busier channels as well. Your "clearer" channels will still have interference originating from the busy channels, so there is little to gain. What happens when you put your system in between two of the "standard" channels is that now you get interference from both of them. So, if you were to use, say, channel 3,. South Korea stands out as an international 5G benchmarkSouth Korea is a global leader in 5G technology and adoption, having launched the first commercial 5G networks in April 2019. Its exclusive use of C-band for 5G services, with no sub-GHz spectrum allocated for 5G, also puts it in a unique position. This focus on C-band across the entire market has led to strong 5G network densification, with the OECD’s most recent Digital Economy Outlook 2024, highlighting the lead South Korea enjoys among a selection of advanced global markets on 5G deployment, with 593 5G base stations per 100,000 inhabitants, well ahead of next placed Lithuania (328) and Finland (251). Earlier this year, the Korean regulator, the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) announced that South Korea had attained nationwide 5G coverage.MSIT allocated wide bands to each of the three mobile operators, KT, SK Telecom and LG U+, with the former two receiving 100 MHz, and the latter initially receiving 80 MHz. Despite its spectrum disadvantage, our previous South Korean benchmark placed LG U+ in pole position in terms of median download performance. Since that benchmark, LG U+ was awarded an additional 20 MHz of C-band spectrum in mid-2022, which it deployed during 2023, which brought its C-band holdings in line with the competition.Given its level of network densification, and deployment in wide spectrum bands in the prized C-band, it’s no surprise that South Korea consistently ranks in the top-10 of Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index for mobile performance, (which ranks countries based on median download speeds), currently placing 6th as of October 2024.This lead is helping deliver improved consumer experiences, with South Korea outpacing other East Asian markets (including Japan, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong) on mobile gaming performance, recording the lowest latency, as well as the highest median download and upload performance in the region.Strong 5G adoption, but performance has been a concern for consumersFrom a consumer perspective, South Korea is a mature 5G market, with LG U+, for example, recording a 5G penetration rate (among handsets) in excess of 70% as of Q3 2024. South Korean users have been swift to embrace the new technology, with 5G connections in the market growing steadily, crossing the 30 million mark during 2023, and reaching 36.11 million as of Q3 2024, according to GSMA Intelligence.Despite strong adoption, and 5G providing a significant uplift over 4G performance in the market – median 5G download speeds in November 2024 were 524.23 Mbps across the market according to Speedtest Intelligence, compared to 64.08 Mbps for 4G-LTE – the mobile providers have had to focus their efforts on continuous improvements in performance levels. All three mobile providers were fined by South Korea’s antitrust regulator in 2023,Comments
