Kindle mandatory update

My sweet cousin, having read my previous blog post on how much I love my Kindle, warned me the other day about an URGENT Amazon announcement for my reader. Thankfully when I clicked for more info, my Fire HDX 8.9 particular model was not on the list for those needing the IMMEDIATE UPDATE before the March 22, 2016 date.If you purchased a Kindle eReader in 2012 or earlier, please visit Amazon’s announcement page to see model specs and instructions. If you don’t perform the update via Wi-Fi by March 22nd, you are going to have more inconvenient hoops to jump through to update your device. A snapshot from that page is below. This update automatically downloads and installs on your Fire tablet when connected wirelessly; however, you can also manually download the software and transfer the update to your device via USB cable.I’ll probably go ahead and sync mine before the mandatory date even though it’s not required for my Fire HDX 8.9 device- just to be sure I’m all set.On a similar note, I’ve been asked to do 2 more book reviews. Amazon has released a “mandatory” update to its Kindle app for iOS devices, informing users that not updating the app to the latest version may cause a loss of books and account registration upon upgrade to Apple’s upcoming iOS 7 mobile operating system.This is a fix for a Kindle issue with the upcoming iOS7 OS upgrade that may cause customers to have to re-register and re-download books from Amazon. Amazon has started sending out emails to Kindle owners with older devices notifying them that they need to make sure their Kindle’s software is up-to-date in order to continue downloading Kindle books and having access to the Kindle store and other Kindle services.All Kindles from the very first generation model all the way up to the Kindle Paperwhite 2 are affected. If they have older outdated software after March 22nd, then downloads won’t work, the Kindle store won’t work, and other Kindle services will stop working as well.Like usual, Amazon isn’t giving any specific details about the change but obviously they are updating or changing how Kindle books and services are served to Kindle devices.To be clear, there isn’t a “new” update specifically for this change; Kindles just need to be up-to-date with current software, not necessarily the latest software. It’s more about transitioning devices from older outdated software to newer software.In most cases all you need to do to make sure your Kindle gets the required update is to turn on Wi-Fi or 3G wireless.
