It is important to note that driving time cannot be changed to non-driving. However, elogs can be edited if there is missing information or clarification is needed. For example, if a driver forgets to change their status from on-duty to off-duty, they would need to edit their log through the ELD trucking app to prevent a violation. They can edit it themselves or authorize the carrier to do it, as long as they follow Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) guidelines.According to the FMCSA, drivers and authorized personnel can edit ELD records under the following conditions:They must add an annotation to the edit that describes the reason for the change. An edit is a change to the elog record. An annotation is a note added to the edit explaining the reason it was necessary. Simply editing the record without adding an annotation can create compliance issues.Drivers must review the edit to make sure it is accurate before resubmitting their records. If administrative personnel makes the edit, the driver must approve it before resubmitting it.Once an edit is made, the elog system retains the original record and the edited record. They must retain the original records for at least six months. What Happens When an Electronic Logging Device Malfunctions? If an electronic logbook presents a malfunction, the driver is responsible for notifying the motor carrier in writing within 24 hours. The driver must also reconstruct the record of duty status (RODS) for their current 24-hour work period. If they cannot retrieve the information for the previous seven consecutive days, these have to be reconstructed on paper as well. Manual log preparation must continue until the device is fixed, which should not take more than eight days. If the electronic logging device is not working correctly after eight days and an extension has not been requested to the FMCSA, the driver risks being placed out of service. Add options as you grow when you need them ELD-Related Fines and CSA ScoresThere are penalties for drivers and carriers who fail to comply with FMCSA regulations, including the use of an electronic logging system. Made. A detailed account of time, date, location, and even nearby mileposts and highways is necessary for accuracy. The final step is verifying that the total hours sum up to 24, rectifying any errors, and maintaining legibility. By sticking to these practices, truckers can successfully complete their manual logbooks and stay compliant with federal laws, even during ELD malfunctions. The data into seven Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs). A score of 100 is the worst, and zero is the best. A high score puts carriers and drivers at a higher risk of future inspections. It can also increase their insurance premiums. Clients might also mistrust a client with a high CSA score and choose a different option for their driving needs. Before April 1, 2018, if a roadside inspector noted an elog violation on an inspection report, it was not calculated into their score and drivers were not placed out of service. However, drivers now face higher CSA scores, fines, and the risk of being put out of service for any violations related to electronic logbooks. Since December of 2017, there has been a list of 22 elog violations that can earn points to carriers’ scores. For example, a driver can get up to seven points for not using the appropriate method to record HOS data. They can also get five points for wrong or incomplete logs, including failing to annotate a malfunction with their logging device. Drivers receive just one point for less severe violations, such as not certifying elogs or not having the manual on board. All points add up, and they affect more than the perception of a carrier’s risk. There are also expensive fines to consider. The FMCSA increased the prices in 2021, with penalties ranging from $338 for first-time violations to $196,992 for transporting hazardous materials while unfit for assignment. Fines specific to ELDs (knowingly falsifying logbook records, using an unauthorized device, and not using an electronic logging system when required) can result in up to $13,072 and being placed out of service. Make sure your electronic logbook app for truckers is reliable and ready to provide support to stay compliant and save time and money.
