On Dec. 1, 1954, the first hospital dedicated to the residents of St. Tammany opened its doors with 30 beds and 17 physicians from Covington, Mandeville, Slidell, Madisonville and Lacombe.That grand opening, held for a country hospital designed to meet the needs of the residents north of Lake Pontchartrain, since has grown into a flagship regional health care system with branches across the area.And exactly 70 years later, St. Tammany Health System celebrated both its past and future with an anniversary party held Dec. 1 in the lobby of Covington’s St. Tammany Parish Hospital. System President and CEO Joan Coffman told the crowd of employees, volunteers, former patients, community leaders, health care system colleagues and residents gathered for the event that the “secret to success” during the past seven decades is simple. “Even with all that growth and our evolution into a modern health system, our colleagues have continued to place our neighbors and the needs of our community at the center of everything we do,” she said.During the anniversary party, staff debuted a new video ad that features St. Tammany scenes and health system physicians, nurses and staff. In addition, attendees posed as part of a photo that will be used for a keepsake 70th anniversary St. Tammany Health System Christmas tree ornament. The commemoration of the anniversary began in September 2023 when the health system's website started spotlighting key moments in the hospital's past. It was a 70-week project that culminated with the Dec. 1 celebration.That chronicle of history created the "70-for-70" flip book album. It spans from the hospital’s inception in the 1940s; highlights memorabilia from napkins and newspaper articles to nostalgic photos; and concludes with the most recent developments in 2024, such as openings of the St. Tammany Academic Center and a family medicine clinic. Jeff Landry accuses judge of ‘mishandling’ NOPD consent decree Tape said Monday he won’t be resigning.“I maintain my innocence,” Tape said. “That was 23 years ago these accusations were made. That’s all I need to say about it. If you don’t believe in innocence until proven guilty, you won’t qualify for a jury.”The group of Northshore legislators says they’re now supporting a recall effort against the coroner. However, some community members aren’t on board.“Are they salacious allegations? Yes. Would we like it if he didn’t have that? Yes, but in reality, he’s done a good job since then,” said Terry King, a member of Concerned Citizens of St. Tammany. “And, until there’s a reason to get rid of him, I don’t know that we could. I certainly won’t be spending my Saturdays going out and doing that.”Tape is also facing criticism for cutting the office’s Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program, which provides specialized health care to survivors of sexual assaults in four parishes.“Livingston [Parish] can take it. Any of the hospitals can take it,” Tape said. “If it’s a moneymaker, take it. I’m a businessman. It’s not a moneymaker. Take it if you want it.”Tape believes those who have been sexually assaulted should be examined at their local hospital.Ginesse Barrett, who led the SANE Program, says hospitals are typically too busy to offer the appropriate amount of time that’s needed for these exams. She said aiming to keep a commitment to patient and community care at the forefront has helped the system touch the lives of countless northshore residents. Milton pointed to development of the Parenting Center, Community Wellness Center, Home Health and Hospice as ways health care providers have been able to reach residents in new and productive ways.“They are continuing to invest in facilities and technology and the workforce, investing in academic partnerships and initiatives like the St. Tammany Academic Center to ensure the growth of the workforce pipeline,” she said. “It was exciting to see the changes over time and the community’s growth.”
