TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa Animal Services shared their advice after a positive rabies case in a dog was confirmed in Tulsa city limits."So February 14th, a bite incident was reported by a citizen here in Tulsa," said Colton Jones, the Operations Manager for Tulsa Animal Services. "A follow up investigation by our animal control officers into that incident found that the biting animal had been euthanized by its owner and buried outside of the city limits, so we made a request that it be exhumed and brought back to us so that post-bite testing could be done for rabies. In the process of submitting that to the state lab for testing for rabies, we did receive a positive result and at this time we're currently working with the Oklahoma State Department of Health for post-exposure protocols for the people involved and then taking care of any animals that are needing to be taken care of."According to City of Tulsa veterinarian Carolynne Cash, it's quite rare to have a dog test positive for rabies in the state of Oklahoma."Bites are common, but the positive rabies in a dog or cat is not super common. Probably in the whole state—I was talking to the State Health Department yesterday—probably every year between two to five...I think the ratio is kind of like three cats to two dogs basically test positive.
