If you’re as much of a durable fencing enthusiast as I am, then you know that the sustainability of traditional timber fencing has been a hotly debated topic in recent years. Although timber can be a sustainable, regenerative material in some aspects, it’s sadly not the most practical material for fencing – especially here in Australia, with our harsh and changeable climate. Because timber fence panels are highly prone to rotting, splitting, and wood warping, traditional timber picket fence panels come with a pretty limited lifetime in comparison to other types of fencing materials. Even the most sustainably sourced timber will still degrade decades before other more durable fencing materials that are on the market today. And the costs and carbon emissions associated with repeat production and the maintenance or total replacement of traditional timber fences will naturally start to add up. Thankfully, there are a wide range of different durable and affordable fencing supplies available for Aussie consumers today, most of which are composed of some of Australia’s most sustainably produced fencing materials.Best Durable Fencing Styles To Traditional Timber Today, I’ll be diving deeper into these extra durable fencing alternatives to traditional timber picket fences, so that you can select a modern fencing material that best suits your property and local climate. The top durable fence styles to replace timber fences include:PVC Semi Privacy Picket FencingPVC Vertical Paling FencingAluminium Slat FencingAluminium Blade FencingBlack Crimped Spear Top Security FencingColorbond Fencing Panels 1. PVC Semi Privacy Picket Fencing First, let’s start with a superb fencing style for residential properties: our PVC semi privacy picket fencing. Designed as an homage to traditional timber picket fencing but with a Hamptons Coastal twist, this modern fencing style is crafted using high-quality PVC (polyvinyl chloride). Alongside being naturally UV-resistant, PVC fencing materials are also resistant to warping, splitting, and other kinds of corrosion or wear and tear. This allows our PVC picket fencing to possess a far longer usable lifespan that traditional timber fencing pickets. Yes, timber picket fences can be replaced one slat or one picket at a time. But with these PVC picket fences, you won’t even have to worry about monitoring the health of individual slats. You can just sit back and watch your PVC fence to look pristine for decades to come. That in a nutshell, is one of the major differences between PVC durable fences and timber fences.2. PVC VerticalFences Act 2 Scene 1 Summary - Studypool

Safety Fences and the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC While reading the new Guide to application of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, Edition 2.1, I was interested to see that the last sentence in section 42, dealing with Safety Components and their status under the Machinery Directive, is this:Specific guidance on safety fences as a safety component is given in §411.I found this interesting for two reasons:There is no mention of the term “Safety Fences” in Edition 2.0. (see above picture).Section 411 is an addition to Edition 2.1, it is not revised.Section 411 describes that safety fences are safety components per 2006/42/EC, Article 1 (1) (c). Additionally, three common scenarios that are faced by machinery manufacturers are detailed. Below, I have summarized the scenarios and what the Machinery Working Group says about them in section 411.Scenario 1 – the safety fence is not considered a Safety Component per Article 1 (1) (c).The machinery manufacturer either designs and builds a proprietary safety fence for a specific machine or completely designs the safety fence and hires a fence manufacturer to make the safety fence from the manufacturer’s design.Scenario 2 – the safety fence is considered a Safety Component per Article 1 (1) (c).The fence manufacturer performs the design and build function for a safety fence for a third party’s machine. That is to say, the machinery manufacturer hires a fence manufacturer to look at the machine, design the safety fence, and deliver the safety fence to the machinery manufacturer. In scenario 2 the machinery manufacturer must require a CE marking on the delivered safety fence and a declaration of conformity (and everything else required by the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC per Article 5 (1)).Scenario 3 – the safety fence is not considered a Safety Component per Article 1 (1) (c).A supplier or manufacturer supplies a safety fence component to a machine builder or as a replacement part for an existing fence in service on EU soil. In scenario 3 it is defined that safety fence components are not to be considered as safety components under the Machinery Directive. However, section 411 does clarify that an individual component of a safety fence that has a direct safety function, such as a gate, could be considered as a safety component on its own.If you are sending a machine to the EU, or preparing a bid to build one for a European customer: please call us. We will sort out the requirements beforehand and will give you an accurate price for the CE marking evaluation and testing services that you will need. Construction. If you’re looking for long-lasting privacy solutions that require minimal maintenance, composite fences are an excellent choice. Check out composite fencing options here for more information.4. Bamboo Fencing: Sustainable and UniqueBamboo is another eco-friendly option for privacy fencing. As a rapidly renewable resource, bamboo offers a sustainable alternative to traditional wood fencing. Bamboo fences can be used in a variety of designs, from traditional to contemporary, and provide a unique, natural aesthetic.Pros:Renewable and sustainable.Provides a natural, rustic look.Lightweight and easy to install.Cons:Requires periodic maintenance to prevent wear. Can be susceptible to pests if not treated properly.5. Metal Fencing: Modern and DurableWhile metal fences such as wrought iron or aluminum may not offer complete privacy on their own, they can be paired with other materials like wood slats or vinyl inserts to provide the desired seclusion. Metal fences are known for their strength and durability, offering a more industrial or contemporary look.Pros:Extremely durable and long-lasting.Low maintenance. Can be designed to fit modern or industrial aesthetics.Cons:May require additional materials (e.g., wood slats) for full privacy. Can be more expensive upfront.Design Considerations for Your Privacy Fence1. Height of the FenceWhen it comes to privacy, height is key. Depending on your needs and local regulations, you’ll want to choose a fence height that provides the maximum level of seclusion. In most cases, a fence that is 6 to 8 feet tall will provide adequate privacy. However, it’s important to check local zoning laws and building codes to ensure that your fence complies with any height restrictions.2. Style and DesignThe style of your fence should complement both your personal preferences and the overall aesthetic of your property. A solid, vertical fence will provide the most privacy, but horizontal slat fences can also be effective if designed properly.Solid Fences: These fences completely block the view, providing full privacy. Solid wood, composite, or vinyl fences are commonly used for this purpose.Lattice Fences: Lattice fences offer partial privacy while allowing for some visibility. If you want to maintain an open feel while still having some seclusion, lattice designs work well.Decorative Fences: If you’re looking for a balance between privacy andComments
