Get that thought out of your head and don’t ever let it back in.Despite what you’ve been led to believe, slower swing-speed players very often benefit from higher-compression balls.With few exceptions, firmer balls spin more and, very often, slower players are lacking spin. Fun fact: Titleist fits more golfers into Pro V1x than any other ball in its lineup.Why?Because the Pro V1x launches relatively high and spins and, as it turns out, many slower swing speed players have trouble hitting the ball in the air and generating spin.Would a slow swing player be better off with a Chrome Soft X than a Chrome Soft or with a TP5 instead of a Tour Response?In many cases, yes. Yeah, I know: “But I don’t like the way it feels.”Adapt.What about faster players?It is absolutely true that most faster players will lose driver distance with a low-compression “soft” golf ball due to the core over-compressing at higher speed. Worth a quick mention: low-compression balls are invariably low-spin. It’s the consequence of all the layers needing to be at least somewhat soft.As a quick reminder, spin in the golf ball is a result of having a soft layer over a firmer one. The greater the difference in firmness between two adjoining layers, the more the ball will spin. When everything needs to be kinda soft (as they do in a low-compression ball), you don’t get the same firmness difference between layers and you get less spin because of it.Most low-compression “soft” balls also offer higher trajectory. Higher flight with steeper descent angles is the lever that gets pulled to offset the low spin properties. Without the higher flight, low-spin (soft) balls would be unplayable for most.There are exceptions. AVX tends to fly lower than other lower-spin balls. The substructure had to be changed to give those lower spin rates in the longer clubs. Ball speed and distance have been added via the HyperFast Soft Core. Callaway has an entirely new rubber system which gives the target compression and gives the best feel and speed balance. Seamless Tour Aero refers to a new, uniquely designed aerodynamic package to bring more consistency into the golf ball flight. Each model of golf ball has its own individual dimple pattern relative to what launch properties each golf ball needs. The new design features a combination of Callaway’s hexagonal surface geometry with strategically placed spherical dimples that provide stability through the entire ball flight.The High-Performance Tour Urethane Soft Cover is for optimised greenside spin and control. For those considering using one of the best Callaway golf balls, there are three to choose from. The standard Chrome Soft golf ball is aimed at the widest portion of the market, an all-rounder with a soft feel aimed at moderate swing speed players. Then there is the Chrome Soft X 2022 which should deliver all round performance for faster swingers and is the brand’s most used ball on Tour. And finally, you have the Chrome Soft X LS which Callaway says is ‘designed for max distance in a fine-tuned lower spin profile.’The question is, how well does it perform, how does it compare to the other balls in the range and is it one of the best low spin golf balls on the market this year. We tested all three on the golf course and using a SkyTrak launch monitor to find out.(Image credit: Future)We are going to dive straight into the driver numbers here. The X LS version is designed to be higher launching than the Chrome Soft X and that was exactly what we discovered. The former was launching a fraction under 2˚ higher. However, it is also designed to be lower spinning but at our clubhead speed (around 112 mph), the spin profile between all three Callaway balls was very similar. There was just over 200 rpm difference in average spin between them and actually, it was the standard Chrome Soft that delivered the lowest spin performance. Indeed, for us, the X version was also marginally lower spinning than the X LS.One important benefit to highlight is the ball speed. In our testing the X and X LS versions were hugely impressive - we saw a jump up between these two models and the standard Chrome Soft version. This combination of fast ball speed and high launch delivered a satisfying flight with plenty of distance. However, if you are faster swinger looking for a Callaway golf ball that offers low spin driver performance, we recommend you also test the Chrome Soft X to see how it stacks up in your own game.(Image credit: Future)The low spin performance of the X LS was more evident in the mid-iron testing we did. At 4693 rpm, the spin was a little lower than we’d usually want from a 7-iron.
