Cincinnati Opera has announced the launch of The Black Opera Project, a groundbreaking, three-opera commissioning initiative that engages Black creators to develop new works celebrating Black stories.The first program of its kind, The Black Opera Project seeks to illuminate the resilient spirit and vibrant heritage of the Black American experience.The project is the outgrowth of Cincinnati Opera's previously announced grant from the Mellon Foundation to support the development of three fully staged, full-length operas by creators of color focused on uplifting stories about the Black community. Cincinnati Opera's overall financial commitment toward The Black Opera Project is anticipated to be approximately $5 million.“The launch of The Black Opera Project marks the fruition of dreams long held by Black artists like me,” said Morris Robinson, world-renowned bass and Cincinnati Opera artistic advisor. “While I was singing the title role in Porgy and Bess in 2019, Cincinnati Opera leaders invited my fellow cast members and me into a conversation about opera's future. Articles > Black Gangster Disciples: Prison Gang ProfileOrigins The Black Gangster Disciples (GD) were formed in Chicago's Englewoodneighborhood in the 1960's. The organization has traditionally portrayeditself to the public as a legitimate yet aggressive agent of socialand political reform. Indeed, some members today claim to pursue Larry Hoover'snew public title for the gang, "Growth and Development"exclusively, denying further involvement in criminal activity andinstead focusing on community development. Police argue, however, that the nameis simply a public-friendly disguise for illicit operations. During the 1960's, the Gangster Disciples, alongside the Blackstone Rangers (which were later renamed the Black P. Stones), received substantial public funds from Chicago's municipal government to set up and operate community service programs targeting delinquent street youth. Police argued that these programs were strengthening the gang's criminal operations, while giving legitimacy to their politics of radicalization. In 1967, the Office of Economic Opportunity, with the help of the General Motors Company, gave $50,000 to fund the Youth Manpower Project, a program whose goal was to get black, inner-city teenagers off the street and into academic training programs and, eventually, work-placements. The program was run jointly by the Gangster Disciples and the Black P. Stones, under the leadership of The Woodlawn Organization (TWO), a controversial grassroots organization that was often in conflict with Chicago's City Hall. Since the training and placement were carried out by the gang leaders, themselves, (two leaders from the Disciples and two leaders from the Black P. Stones), critics argued that the Youth Manpower Project also allowed the gangs to fund their own drug-trade operations, prostitution rings and gambling establishments, and to stockpile weapons (Jacobs, 1983). Three years before the beginning of the TWO project, however, Chicago had already received a $685,000 federal grant from the Kennedy administration to fund street youth programs (called "Streets"). Female Faces Female Faces is a project that addresses female rights through video portraits. The design of this one-page website evokes brutalist vibes as well as the simplicity of the Swiss Style. There is lots of white text on a black canvas as well as large headlines and grid lines that divide the screen into a myriad of smaller sections. At first glance, there are no other colors save for black and white. However, when you reach the bottom of the page or open the hidden menu, you’ll notice the moderately used red gradient. As you explore the homepage and move the mouse pointer over the list of videos, featured images appear behind movie titles, adding a touch of color to the site. Project singles look similar to the homepage except that they also include video previews, inviting you to discover more about this interesting project. OTK Studio OTK Studio is the design and technology studio of Oliver Thomas Klein. The site’s design is a bit unusual, with the entire content placed in just one section. The screen is divided into two parts – on the left, you can see the list of projects Klein has worked on, and on the right, you can explore the visuals representing each project. Large typography, the black and white content, and the stripped-off design give off slight brutalist vibes. To indicate the type of work he did on each project, Klein opted for tiny, colorful circles, with each color symbolizing a specific action (e.g., art direction, design, etc.).
