It really depends on the song, room, player, and the drums themselves.I go back and forth all the time depending on all of the above factors. Sometimes the APIs on overheads are the ticket, sometimes the Neves. Same for kick and snare.In general, however, I think I more often (like 60% of the time) choose Neve for kick / snarem and API for OH. But that is more because of the song material and drummers that I work with most often, not because of my general preference of the preamps for those specific applications. Either my Vintech 1272 on guitars(Neve) or my Manley Dual mono. Same thing for vocals and bass. Where API would be usable, to me, on any given source, my Manley or Neve would fit better. They are both different and respond to input gain vs. output trim differently, in a wide variety of ways and very musically. API has one knob, it's hot on output and always seems to need the pad pushed in. Just don't care for API pre's outside of toms and snare. Also, for snare in my studio, I use a Focusrite ISA220 with an i5 for top, and the Manley for Bottom, also with an i5. The EQ is perfect for snare and so is the compression.
