While I'm not usually a big fan of MMOs, anything having to do with hearing lamentations from my enemies' women will usually catch my eye. Part single player, part MMORPG, Age of Conan – Hyborian Adventures is set in the dark world of author Robert E. Howard. With a strong emphasis on several different combat types, Age of Conan looked mighty impressive at this year's E3, so I decided to catch up with Gaute Godager, Game Director for AoC to learn a bit more about Conan's upcoming PC adventure. Shack: What is the storyline behind Age of Conan?Gaute Godager: The storyline in Age of Conan (or Conan for short) is set in the time after the novel "Hour of the Dragon" by Conan author Robert E. Howard. The story [begins] with you, the player ... as a slave on a Stygian (Stygians are one of the 3 races playable in the game; more on those below) slave galley ship. Your memory has been wiped, and you have an ugly mark on your chest bearing a cruel burnt in hand. As you progress through the game, you will gradually regain the memory of who you were, and what you were – your skills, abilities and knowledge will be regained through the act of gaining levels and solving quests (the so called "Destiny Quests"). If you have read the "Hour of the Dragon", you will know that Conan is the king of Aquillonia – the pinnacle of Hyborian civilization. In Hour of the Dragon he is betrayed, and dethroned for some time by a conspiracy of enemies. In our game he is back on the throne, newlywed but still with unrest brewing in the land. Through the game the player will learn that his fate is intimately tied to that of the King. Through the story, quests, dialogue etc the player will find himself / herself interacting more and more with the king in order to save his kingship, your life and the world from one of Conan's arch enemies. Age of Conan - Hyborian Adventures Questing & CombatNow that you've made it through The Basics in Part One of our Beginner's Guide, it's time to turn things up a notch! By now you should be familiar with creating a character in Age of Conan and the game's user interface.In Age of Conan, as with other MMORPGs, quests are a great way to gain XP (experience points) and rewards, such as gear upgrades and currency. Quests are given out by NPCs (Non-Player Characters) throughout Hyboria. Unless you have moved from the beach already, your first Quest NPC can be found right behind you. Casilda is blocking the entrance to the jungle and she needs your help. In Age of Conan, Quest NPCs are recognizable by the "!" symbol over their heads, a "?" symbolizes a quest that is ready to turn in.In order to pick up a quest in Age of Conan you typically must speak to a quest-giver NPC or examine an item that will trigger a quest. Once you have accepted the quest you will be able to find it in your Quest Journal.Some quests will ask you to kill a number of a specific type of mob, while other quests may ask you to perform several tasks before receiving your reward. While most quests are not class specific, there are longer quest lines which are, such as the Destiny Quests in Tortage. After you have completed a quest, return to the NPC quest-giver for your reward. Often completion of a quest will open up a new quest from the same NPC.Check your Quest Journal often by pressing the "J" key on your keyboard or click the Quest button in the Character Menu at the top of your screen. Your Quest Journal will show your progress and the reward for completion. Quests are split up by zone and time of day, then quest trees show a quest's difficulty sorted by color. Green would symbolize an easy quest, yellow would be intermediate and red would be hard. Inventory and Equipment To toggle your inventory use the "I" key on your keyboard or click the Inventory button in the Character Menu at the top of your screen. Your inventory is what you are carrying on your person. Whenever you visit a town you should sell anything you do not want in order to free up space in your inventory. You
