Nintendo's WiiWare service just launched in Japan and it's set to debut in America this May. WiiWare has opened up an exciting new retail avenue for third-parties whose games don't show up on traditional store shelves. One such company is XGen Studios, best known for its titles Defend Your Castle and Pillage the Village -- simple, but addictive efforts that have been played hundreds of thousands of times on the Internet. Recently, XGen revealed that it was planning to bring a completely overhauled version of Defend Your Castle to WiiWare. We caught up with company CEO Skye Boyes to talk about the project, about the WiiWare service in general, and more. XGen was also kind enough to provide us with exclusive new assets -- screens and videos -- of Defend Your Cast on WiiWare. IGN: First of all, explain the concept powering Defend Your Castle for our readers who have never played the flash title? Skye Boyes: Defend your Castle takes place on a grassy plain surrounded by invaders. You are the commander of your Castle, and must Defend it by picking up invaders and flinging them mercilessly to their death. During nightfall, you'll have the opportunity administer repairs and purchase upgrades and fortifications for your castle. IGN: WiiWare has launched in Japan and many of the titles thus far feel almost copy/pasted from previously released PC builds. You guys have in contrast taken the original Defend Your Castle and completely made it over. What prompted that decision? Skye: We took the game back to the drawing board to add features made possible by the Nintendo Wii platform, such as 4-player cooperative gameplay, accelerometer use, particles, and lighting effects. The vast amount of player feedback from the original (estimated at 10-20 million plays) also allowed us to improve upon the The shop screen music, were created with the human mouth ("Vocal Foley"). It was a lot of fun recording them. IGN: We mentioned Pillage the Village before. Any plans to bring it to WiiWare, too, along with similar graphical and mechanical enhancements? Skye: Although we plan to bring more XGen titles to WiiWare in the future, we haven't announced any details just yet! IGN: How many people developed Defend Your Castle for WiiWare and how long has it taken? Skye: Development started in October of 2007, involving a total of seven team members. Our core team consisted of two programmers and one artist, with other members in supporting roles. IGN: What do you think of the WiiWare service and what is your opinion of the WiiWare development environment? Has it been easy to become a developer? Do you as a developer feel satisfied with the deal you get through WiiWare? Skye: Digital distribution is great for players, and should allow developers to provide greater value to consumers. Although Nintendo seems selective, they appear to be opening their doors to smaller, proven studios. We've been very pleased with our experience developing for WiiWare. IGN: 500 Wii Points, eh? Seems like a bargain. How did you come up with the pricing model? Skye: We'd like as many players to get their hands on Defend your Castle as possible. IGN: Any final words for Wii owners anticipating the arrival of Defend Your Castle on WiiWare? Skye: Keep an eye out for our upcoming interview in Nintendo Power next month, as well as further media and information soon!Defend Your Castle WiiWare - YouTube

If You've looked on IGN you may have seen that Defend Your Castle is getting its own wii game. Yes i do mean Defend Your Castle the little flash game where u pick up little people and fling them into the air. Its coming out as a $5.00 WiiWare game with 4 player support co-op and better/changed graphics. Stick figures are now armed with office supplies as they attack you and no longer go splat in a pool of blood but other than that the game remains the same. I just wanted to know how many people will be making the $5.00 purchase of this flash title and why. I know i will because i support flash work i and try to support flash games that become regular console games....as rare as it is. Will the fact that you can already play this game free on your wii browser stop u from buying it for the 4 player support? What do you think about more flash games becoming WiiWare games and such? Would you go as far as purchasing flash like movies on WiiWare?Defend Your Castle WiiIf a game is good I'll buy it.If they want to make a Wiiware title then heck, worth a shotDefend Your Castle Wii
If a game is good I'll buy it.If they want to make a Wiiware title then heck, worth a shot
Jason, did you get my PM?

If a game is good I'll buy it.If they want to make a Wiiware title then heck, worth a shot
Jason, did you get my PM?
I did but all my PM's say that it was sent in 1969 and there's no message, resend?

If a game is good I'll buy it.If they want to make a Wiiware title then heck, worth a shot
Jason, did you get my PM?
I did but all my PM's say that it was sent in 1969 and there's no message, resend?
Oh it's messed up then, just go on AIM for a minute. It's not a flash game. It's a 2D game with paper textures. It's way more worth than a flash. The one on Wii has way more content. Like Alien Hominid. and kept mentioning flash Control. Its a lot of fun to pick up invaders and fling them into the air using two arms, although the best players seem to prefer a highly controlled wrist-flicking motion. IGN: Defend Your Castle features four-player cooperative play. Based on some footage we've seen, it seems like this can get pretty crazy. Is the multiplayer mode entirely offline or do you also have an online component over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection? Skye: Despite the lack of online play, the cooperative multiplayer in Defend your Castle is my favorite feature. With 4 players, the game gets absolutely manic by level 30, and you'll really need to work as a team to push back the relentless hordes. We've included jump-in/ jump-out style gameplay with dynamic difficulty adjustment. For example, if you're playing DyC by yourself while waiting for some friends to show up, anyone can pick up a Wii Remote as they arrive and start playing. If you have to get the door, just put your Wii Remote down; the game will detect one less player and automatically adjust.. We've also added a competitive multiplayer element called "King of the Castle". The player with the highest score at the end of the round is crowned king and bestowed the privilege of upgrading the castle, casting spells, and training units. IGN: Is the game running in 4:3 on WiiWare, or does it support 16:9 and 480p? Skye: DyC supports progressive scan (480p), outputting at 4:3. The bulk of development has been done in widescreen mode (16:9) using TV scaling, so the game looks great at either aspect ratio. IGN: Defend Your Castle has an interesting audio presentation. Tell us how you designed it. Skye: Actually, 90% of the sound effects in the game, from footsteps, to the paint bucket 'bloop', as well as[WiiWare] Defend Your Castle - Dolphin

Very wacky! It's also a lot of fun listening to the invaders make funny noises as you toss 'em around. Upgrading your castle also gives you some awesome options that can really help flatten the barbarians if you have mad skills. The coolest part is that up to four players can join the chaos, jumping in anytime, to help you fling barbarians around. And, the highest scorer gets to be king for the next level!Splurtch...There are a few flaws with this retro game. The first is that you only score half-points when you're playing with friends and that's pretty lame! The biggest problem though is that you run out of upgrades really fast. After just a couple of hours, you'll have all the towers and upgrades. Then it's just a question of how long you can stay alive.Bashing BarbariansDefend Your Castle is a fun little game. It's great for playing with friends, or for a quick twitch-fest while you're killing a few minutes. It runs out of new stuff fairly fast, but for 500 Wii points (just $5) you can download a game that's a lot of fun!Thumbs Up:Super cheap!Up to four players can join the mayhem.Fling + Splurtch... = Wheee! You can save your game and continue even if your castle get smashed.Thumbs Down:You can play it online for freeMore players = less points?
