A new study of how the first purpose-built anti-tank helicopter gunship – the Bell AH-1 Cobra – engaged communist armor and well-armed irregular fighters in the war for control of Vietnam.The Vietnam War was often dubbed 'the helicopter war' because it was the first conflict in which helicopters took a dominant role. As the only dedicated gunship to be fielded by US forces during the conflict, the AH-1 Cobra saw combat against North Vietnamese Army (NVA) tanks, armored personnel carriers (APCs), and heavy anti-aircraft weaponry while joining OH-6A "Loach" scout helicopters on "Pink Team" hunter-killer flights. There were more than 700 Cobras operational in Vietnam by 1972, and it proved such an effective weapon that the NVA often avoided shooting at it, fearing massive and instant retribution. In this action-packed new study, Vietnam War expert Peter E. Davies examines the development and deployment of the Cobra, its engagements with Soviet- and Chinese-supplied tanks and heavy machine guns, and how it was adapted to counter devastating surface-to-air missile attacks in 1972. Numerous key clashes – including the Tet Offensive and actions at Loc Ninh and An Loc – are explored in detail, with first-hand accounts, newly commissioned artwork, and more than 50 photographs bringing the operations of this iconic helicopter to life.

Friday’s arrival of an AH-1 Cobra gunship capped a lengthy odyssey for the decommissioned warbird and turned a dream into reality for area war veterans.The 36-year-old attack helicopter arrived at Fowler-Dix-Park VFW Post 5095 under police escort to be greeted by 100 well-wishers, many of them veterans and their families, from East Hampton and neighboring towns.Flanked by the chopper anchored to a flatbed trailer, post member Brendan Flannery, who accompanied the convoy on the 360–mile trek from an Army surplus depot in upstate New York read aloud a manifest formally presenting the aircraft to the post’s leaders.“It’s been a long time coming,” said John Krasnitski, head of the VFW committee that worked on obtaining the Cobra.The moment was particularly poignant for the Flannery family. Anthony H. Flannery, while serving as post commander, rekindled efforts to obtain a military relic to display on the post’s grounds on Maple Avenue, across from the high school.For years, the post had tried unsuccessfully to set up a military display to honor veterans past and present, including the 261 surviving members.“He would be proud,” said son Emmett Flannery, fighting back tears, of his father, who died five years ago.Later, the post hosted a homecoming celebration for older brother Kevin Flannery, an Air Force weapons technician who just returned from Iraq.East Hampton is only the second VFW post in Connecticut, and only the third in the nation, to be loaned a Cobra for display.Still fitted with 20mm cannon and empty rocket and missile pods, the ship will undergo final preparations to being permanently mounted atop 12-foot stanchions in front of the VFW.The stanchions are in the ground. A semi-circular stone wall, resembling the one marking a war memorial across the street on the grounds of the high school, will be erected as part of a memorial garden at the base of the chopper display.Later today, the 8,000-pound aircraft will be towed across town to Belltown Motors for a fresh coat of the olive green paint that adorned it in Vietnam. The craft flew with Bravo Troop, 1st Squadron, 9th Calvary Regiment from August 1968 to September 1970.The aircraft will also be stenciled with the 9th Cavalry’s crossed-sabre insignia and its nom de guerre, “The Peacemaker,” said committee member Mike Stark, who flew helicopters in the same period in Vietnam.“I think it’s cool,” said Stark, whose son John is training to fly the Army’s new-generation Apache attack helicopter. “It’s going to be nice here.”The post, with donations from various community groups and individuals, has raised more than half the estimated $25,000 it will cost to complete the Cobra display, Krasnitski said.The display dedication is scheduled for Sept. 6.
