WCBS 880 on Twitter: LISTEN: The WCBS 880 newsroom staff

LONG ISLAND, NY — For nearly 60 years, WCBS Radio has been a valued news source for New Yorkers, and in particular, Long Islanders. The stunning announcement this week that WCBS Newsradio 880 will pull the plug later this month leaves a void for the dozens of staffers (on-air and behind-the-scenes), anyone who worked there previously and the loyal listeners. "Just being part of it was such an honor," retired WCBS Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs said. "To hear that something so iconic, something so special is ending, it was painful."Find out what's happening in Wantagh-Seafordfor free with the latest updates from Patch.Xirinachs spent more than two decades at 880, most of that reporting in the vaunted morning drive. He said many times over the years people would say they recognized his name or voice from WCBS. Usually everyday citizens, but Xirinachs also got praise from celebrities, including Hillary Clinton. Find out what's happening in Wantagh-Seafordfor free with the latest updates from Patch."Bill and I wake up to you every day," she told him. Whether ex-presidents or current commuters, millions would listen each morning. "It may take a while to realize what they no longer have," he said. "It's sad." That makes sense to me from my DXing in Ontario, though I don't know what the channels are like locally in Edmonton. I've heard 880 here in Kawarthas several times with WCBS off for maintenance (and I think once with help from a directional antenna). And CHED as well but with CFCO in the background. I'm listening to weather and local news from CHED back in 2017 on an audio clip I saved...the two stations were about equal in signal strength and I heard a bunch from AB that night. But CHED has been much less common than CHQT. There's an 880 in Brandon MB that gets out well. I didn't save a CHQT recording -- too bad. RadioActive Moderator

Father, Dr. Frank Field, at WCBS on August 24, 1992, after taking time off. This was the first time the two had worked together. During his time at WWOR, he had a second chance to work with his father, when Dr. Frank Field was hired as a weekend weathercaster before retiring in the early 2000s.Field was fired by WWOR in 2007 after ten years due to budget cuts at both WWOR and sister station WNYW and was replaced by Audrey Puente, a former WCBS weathercaster.
